Borderlands 4 Can Help Hardcore Fans By Making One Feature Easier Than Ever

As a seasoned veteran of the Borderlands universe, I can’t help but feel a tinge of nostalgia when it comes to farming bosses for that elusive legendary gear. However, as much as I appreciate the challenge and the thrill of the hunt, the current method of quitting out to the main menu and reloading my save feels more like an old friend who’s overstayed their welcome than a cherished tradition.

In the world of the Borderlands series, legendary items can be obtained from various types of loot, but unique bosses usually have their exclusive legendary gear. Not only is it tough to make these bosses drop their exclusive legendary loot rather than ordinary gear, but getting it to drop with optimal stats adds another layer of randomness to the equation. As a result, farming Borderlands’ iconic bosses is often seen as the main challenge or endgame cycle within the franchise, particularly for dedicated players who strive for that perfect character build.

Although farming bosses in the Borderlands series is a significant aspect of the endgame, it’s not particularly user-friendly since players often have to exit to the main menu and reload their save for a boss to respawn. To enhance player experience, it would be beneficial to introduce an in-game respawn system for bosses starting with Borderlands 4, and ideally, this feature should persist across future games in the franchise.

The Borderlands Franchise Needs a Proper Boss Respawn Mechanic

In the world of Borderlands, there’s a common practice among players – often informally accepted – to kill a boss, exit the game to the main menu, and then reload back into the game so that the boss respawns. This is primarily used for farming specific legendary items. While such techniques might be considered exploits in most other games, in Borderlands, this method has been a standard tactic for obtaining legendaries since the original Borderlands game was launched.

In Borderlands 2, they tried out a novel method for farming and respawning raid bosses, but unfortunately, this technique was not incorporated into the subsequent mainline Borderlands series following Borderlands 2. Looking back, it would be beneficial if Borderlands 4 reintroduced this abandoned feature to streamline the process of farming bosses.

Borderlands 4 Should Bring Back Borderlands 2’s Raid Boss Respawn Mechanics

In Borderlands 2, players can regenerate Raid bosses by spending their endgame funds. Given that many fans regard these Raid bosses from Borderlands 2’s endgame as a highlight of the series, it would be ideal for Borderlands 4 to reinstate this respawn system and apply it to every unique boss enemy with its own specific loot. This mechanism was not only an effective way to absorb endgame currency, but also a practical method for farming bosses, making its absence in subsequent games of the franchise unfortunate.

In simpler terms, when playing Borderlands 2, players only need to pay for access to the Raid bosses’ battlefield. However, there’s a trick known as “quit-and-reload” that many players use. This method allows them to exit and reload the game, bypassing the cost of entry to the Raid boss area in the process.

Borderlands 4 Should Make Farming Bosses More Convenient

For those who are unfamiliar with the Borderlands series or are relatively new to gaming, exiting to the main menu repeatedly to farm bosses isn’t particularly welcoming for beginners. Yet, it’s a technique deeply ingrained in longtime fans of the franchise. However, it would be beneficial for Borderlands 4 to streamline this process, making it easier not just for newcomers but also veteran players.

Although it’s expected that Borderlands 4 will significantly expand upon the series, there’s ample opportunity to refine the traditional formula with minor quality-of-life adjustments to make the franchise more welcoming for new players and more comfortable for longtime fans. For instance, implementing an in-game respawning mechanism for bosses could revolutionize Borderlands 4’s endgame, streamlining the gameplay experience without diminishing the thrill and satisfaction of defeating each boss.
