Borderlands 4 Developer Breaks Down New Siren Character, Vex

In “Borderlands 4”, players were given a sneak peek into the creative decisions behind Vex, the Dark Siren who is the first Vault Hunter developed for the new installment. The art team of “Borderlands 4” revealed that Vex’s action skills alter the colors of her tattoos and enhance her abilities, such as corrosive weapon impacts and her Phase Pets.

In the Borderlands series, Vex is the newest Siren character introduced. Each game in the franchise introduces a Siren as a playable Vault Hunter. When Borderlands 4 debuts in September, Vex will be one of four playable Vault Hunters. Two more characters will be added later as DLC. Unlike characters such as Amon the Forge Knight or Harlowe the Gravitar, Vex stands out with her dark attire and abilities to summon various Phase Pets and Clones to aid her in battle. Essentially, Vex’s distinct Dark Siren powers offer a variety of long-range options for both solo and cooperative play modes.

In the latest episode of Beyond The Borderlands, members of Gearbox Software’s art team, Max Davenport and Ashley Lyons, discussed the design of the Dark Siren in Borderlands 4. They explained how they incorporated the Siren’s art design into her weapon and skill effects. According to Lyons, while Vex has a dark and edgy appearance, some vibrant colors like deep purples and bright pinks were used for her action skills as a striking contrast. Furthermore, Lyons mentioned that Vex’s action skill will alter the colors and elements of different weapons. To illustrate this, she cited a Tediore weapon with a corrosive element, stating that activating one of Vex’s abilities would make that weapon turn green and change its damage type.

Borderlands 4 Shares The Design Choices Behind Vex The Dark Siren

In the world of Borderlands, it’s noted that the color schemes used for Vex’s action skills are mirrored in her distinctive tattoos, a key characteristic of powerful Sirens like Myra and Lilith. These tattoos, as well as Vex herself, will shift colors based on her active skills. Additionally, her Phase pets and clones will also undergo color changes. It was further revealed during the development of Borderlands 4 that Vex’s Incarnate wings were added later in the process, featuring intricate details that helped shape the Dark Siren’s overall appearance.

Despite Vex’s somber personality setting her apart within the cast of Borderlands 4, her unique abilities and color-shifting powers bring a splash of vibrancy to an otherwise harsh and eccentric world. It remains to be seen whether players opting for their Vault Hunter in the upcoming game will pick Vex due to these distinctive traits.
