Following player concerns about how often good items appear in *Borderlands 4*, creative director Graeme Timmins has confirmed that loot drop rates are set and don’t change based on the game’s difficulty level. He responded to a question from *Borderlands* streamer Ki11er Six on X, stating that guaranteed drops are fixed regardless of difficulty or the ‘UVH’ (Ultimate Vault Hunter) mode.
With dedicated players still grinding for rare weapons and gear in *Borderlands 4*, the recent confirmation of a low drop rate is only making the ongoing controversy worse. A recent test showed that the chance of getting a legendary weapon from a specific boss is only about 5%, which is especially frustrating for players who didn’t realize that difficulty settings don’t improve those odds.
Borderlands 4’s Drop Rates Are the Same on All Difficulties
Games like *Borderlands 2* and *3* had loot systems where harder difficulties meant better chances for rare items, rewarding players for the challenge. However, *Borderlands 4* has fixed drop rates regardless of difficulty, which removes much of the reason for players to repeatedly fight bosses on the hardest settings – like Ultimate Vault Hunter 5 – to get specific items.
Even though the chance of finding legendary items hasn’t changed in *Borderlands 4*’s Ultimate Vault Hunter mode, it’s still worth playing on harder difficulties. While the *frequency* of loot drops stays the same across all difficulty levels, the *quality* of the loot – things like perks, rarity, and stats – is noticeably better on higher difficulties. So, you’ll still find more powerful and useful gear by challenging yourself.
According to Timmins in a recent post, the goal of these changes is to let players farm for specific items at any difficulty level without being penalized. Games like *Destiny 2* have been criticized for requiring higher difficulties to improve drop rates, and *Borderlands 4* shares a similar system, even though their ongoing, online-based model sometimes explains why.
It’s easy to see why players are frustrated, particularly those new to the *Borderlands* series with *Borderlands 4*. Longtime *Borderlands* fans understand how rare items can be, but since *Borderlands 4* is also meant to welcome new players, they might have expected a more satisfying experience when completing challenging tasks.
