Borderlands 4 Has Already Confirmed the Strongest Siren, and It’s Not [SPOILER]

Spoilers for Borderlands 4 Ahead

The world of *Borderlands* is limited to just six Sirens at any one time. While Sirens can transfer their abilities – like Maya did with Ava – if a Siren dies without choosing someone to take over, the next Siren born receives powers randomly. However, this isn’t completely true. *Borderlands 3* hints at a Seventh Siren, and events in *Borderlands 4* suggest this Siren is the most powerful of them all.

Many fans, and Amara herself, believe Lilith is the most powerful Siren in the Borderlands universe. While she’s definitely one of the strongest, the story hints that she may not be anymore, especially with the events of *Borderlands 4*. Currently, she’s the strongest Siren players can control, according to the game’s story, but this new, mysterious Seventh Siren seems to be the source of all the trouble and warnings connected to Lilith.

Why Lilith Is Considered the Strongest Siren

Lilith is incredibly powerful – she even rescues Pandora from Elpis, though it ultimately falls under Kairos’s influence. This rescue alone demonstrates her strength, but the main story of *Borderlands 4* focuses heavily on building up Lilith’s legend, her abilities, and positioning her as a pivotal figure in the universe’s fate. The Ripper Queen, who sees herself as a universe-conquering prophet, apparently realizes at the end that Lilith, not her, was always the key player. While this seems to confirm Lilith is responsible for the end of everything, it’s based on a prophecy we never actually see. Similarly, Arjay, who has Siren-like powers due to experimentation, tries to prevent the Vault Hunters from saving Lilith, believing it will avert a catastrophe.

The story gets even more complex after defeating the Timekeeper and then Arjay, which unlocks the Vault. Inside, players discover the actual End of Time, and encounter what appears to be a future version of Lilith who guards it. This hints at significant events to come, showcasing Lilith’s incredible power over time and dimensions. Importantly, future Lilith gives present Lilith a special object – called both a deodand and the Spark – telling her she’ll know when the time is right to use it.

This object is unique because it essentially comes from the very end of time. It’s called a Spark, which hints that it’s connected to that final moment. It’s also known as a deodand – something historically given up as punishment for causing a death. Normally, possessing this object would mean someone died because of it, but that isn’t the case with the current owner, Lilith. This whole situation demonstrates immense power, and there are two key things to keep in mind:

  • Borderlands 4 goes to great lengths to convince players that Lilith is somehow responsible for the end of the universe. This isn’t foreshadowing, and it isn’t subtle. It is the most obvious red herring to ever red herring.
  • The Spark could easily be interpreted as a way to restart, or save, the universe. Lilith using it should save the world, not doom it, so she may be the savior, but she cannot be the only one based on The Watcher’s prophesied war (more on this in a moment).

The Living Sirens (And Why That’s Important)

Currently, in the Borderlands universe, players are aware of five Sirens who are still alive. While Asha, a character from the comics, might still be living, it’s more probable that her story has concluded. The number of known living Sirens – five – is a significant detail.

  • Lilith (Phasewalk)
  • Tannis (Phaseshift)
  • Ava (Phaselock)
  • Amara (Phasetrance)
  • Vex (Phase Convenant)
  • Powers such as Phaseleech have no current Siren. Presuming that Asha is killed off, neither does Animal Control. There are plenty of other possible powers that have not yet been seen.

The next *Borderlands 4* expansion might hint at the story of the Seventh Siren and lay some groundwork for it, but it probably won’t tell the whole story. It’s more likely that full story will be explored in *Borderlands 5*. Gearbox has usually created self-contained stories in their DLC, so it’s unlikely this one will be different. This could mean *Borderlands 5* will introduce a new playable Siren character, bringing the total number of known, living Sirens to six, and pitting them against the Seventh Siren.

The first downloadable content for Borderlands 4, ‘Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned,’ might hint at future storylines, but it doesn’t seem to be a major step forward in the main plot.

But Why Lilith Isn’t The Strong Siren

As a huge Borderlands fan, I’ve been thinking a lot about who the real threat is in the next game. Even though Borderlands 4 keeps pushing Lilith as the most powerful Siren, capable of wiping everything out, all the clues seem to be pointing towards someone else entirely. The way they’ve been building up the Seventh Siren feels much more like a universe-ending force than Lilith does. Remember that final Eridian message in Borderlands 3, ‘Warning’? Nyriad specifically says, ‘You must never find the Seventh.’ That instantly makes you realize this Siren is something *different*, something truly dangerous. It seems way more likely that the Seventh Siren is the one who ultimately destroys everything, while Lilith somehow survives to the very end of time. I get that Lilith is supposed to carry the seed of a new universe, but that doesn’t mean she’s *saving* anything. Honestly, it doesn’t really make sense for Lilith to be both the destroyer *and* the one who carries the spark of a new beginning.

Nyriad was a Siren who lived with the Eridians and is known for imprisoning the Destroyer on Pandora. Her recorded messages, discovered in both Borderlands 3 and Borderlands 4, frequently provide new insights into Siren and Eridian history.

Knowing about the Seventh Siren makes it clear how hints about Lilith might actually be about her. As The Seer explains in *Borderlands 3*, Sirens don’t follow simple cause and effect. So, we can’t assume Lilith’s powers directly caused the world’s destruction. Interestingly, The Seer calls Sirens embodiments of chaos, which is similar to how the Timekeeper describes Vault Hunters. Considering this, along with the prophecy of The Ripper Queen, Arjay’s concerns, and the new story details in *Borderlands 4*, it seems probable that the Seventh Siren is located in the Phase Dimension, and that this dimension might even be the source of her power. There are Six Galaxies and Six known Sirens, but the existence of a Seventh Siren and the Phase Dimension suggests a connection.

The Seventh Siren is The Most Powerful

Nyriad’s knowledge of the Seventh suggests either her immortality, stretching back to Nyriad’s time, or that the Eridians understood the Seventh was a threat. This foreshadows the arrival of a formidable new Siren. The Ripper Queen interpreted a prophecy about conquering the universe as being about herself, identifying herself with Lilith. However, even if some of that prophecy came true, it doesn’t necessarily mean she correctly identified *who* the conqueror would be – only that a conquest would occur. Additionally, Arjay feared rescuing Lilith would destroy the Six Galaxies, blaming Lilith directly. But this is just one possible explanation. It’s equally possible that permanently freeing someone from the Phase Dimension is inherently dangerous, which would explain why rescuing Lilith caused problems for the Vault Hunters in Borderlands 4. Finally, if the End of Time is contained within a Vault, someone could accidentally unleash it across the Six Galaxies.

If the Phase Dimension is where the Sirens get their abilities and is linked to the Seventh Siren, it’s logical to assume the Seventh Siren has some control over, or connection to, that dimension. This could create a truly frightening backstory. If there are more than six Siren powers, all tied to the Phase Dimension, then the Seventh Siren might either possess this extra power or be trying to obtain it, and the events unfolding in Kairos could ultimately lead to global destruction.

Lilith and the other Sirens might be able to rebuild the universe after it’s destroyed, thanks to the Spark, but they can’t prevent the destruction itself. Whoever causes this collapse – likely the war foreshadowed since *The Pre-Sequel* – would be stronger than Lilith, everyone involved in that war, and even all the Sirens combined. That being is the Seventh Siren. It’s unclear how Gearbox will continue this *Borderlands* story, but the warnings about Lilith seem misleading. The real threat is the Seventh Siren, and her power is what everyone should be worried about.
