The eagerly awaited fourth installment of the Borderlands series, titled “Borderlands 4,” is almost here! With less than a month remaining before it drops on September 12, this highly anticipated title from Gearbox Software promises to deliver an exciting new chapter in their popular looter-shooter saga.
To set itself apart from its predecessor, Borderlands 4 has made some significant changes and is moving away from certain elements that didn’t quite resonate in Borderlands 3. The game aims to mature its tone and narrative while also refining core mechanics and open-world design, offering a fresh experience for fans of the series.
For years, as an ardent follower of the franchise since the 2009 debut, I’ve delved into every Borderlands game, from the main titles and their substantial DLCs to the numerous spin-offs developed by Gearbox. However, throughout this journey, I’ve never chosen a Vault Hunter class that is synonymous with the series’ essence and lore. But in the upcoming release of Borderlands 4, I’m excited to break from tradition and make that long-awaited choice.
Borderlands 4 Has Me Itching to Finally Play As a Siren
I’ve Played Every Borderlands Game So Far Without Being a Siren
When the original “Borderlands” game was released, it felt like a daring innovation and provided immense pleasure to play. Gearbox established the looter-shooter genre’s blueprint and crafted an eccentric, unforeseeable universe, and I found myself captivated by both aspects immediately. At that time, there wasn’t anything quite similar, making it evident why “Borderlands” has grown to be a defining series within the genre.

Absolutely, one of the main attractions of the series is its cooperative gameplay, allowing players to work together to fight off bandits and aliens. However, I’ve mostly played every Borderlands game by myself. When Borderlands 2 was released, I only had one friend whose schedule and gaming preferences matched mine, which allowed us to occasionally play co-op when convenient. My preference in characters and classes often skews towards those with pets, as they can seem like an extra companion on the journey, and are also a strong choice for solo players like myself. So far, my roster of Vault Hunters includes:
- Borderlands: Mordecai (Hunter)
- Borderlands 2: Zero (Assassin)
- Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel: “Handsome Jack” aka Timothy Lawrence (Doppleganger)
- Borderlands 3: Flak (Beastmaster)

In the games BL1, 3, and The Pre-Sequel, Mordecai and Flak were my go-to characters due to their natural fit, with Timothy being a close match since he could create more copies of himself as digiclones. Zero was an exception, yet who wouldn’t be drawn to the enigma of a robot ninja that communicates in haikus? Despite Zero being the anomaly, each character offered its own unique satisfaction, and I enjoyed playing all of them immensely, even if it felt more solitary compared to other games.
In Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, I ran a Spore Warden, as they also had a companion summon skill.
Borderlands 4’s Vex Has Me Incredibly Excited to Play as a Siren for the First Time

In the build-up to the launch of Borderlands 4, I closely followed Gearbox’s unveiling of the new Vault Hunters, paying particular attention to their backgrounds and abilities. Among them, Rafa, with his past as a Tediore soldier and diverse skill set, caught my interest first due to its potential suitability for me based on previous experiences.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been pondering for a moment if now might just be the right time to dive into playing a Siren, especially in the upcoming Borderlands 4. The recent character showcase for Vex really caught my eye and made me eager to make her my main pick. With her intriguing background and my affinity for her personality, she seems like a perfect fit for me.
What’s more, Vex’s new and distinct abilities coupled with her loyal spectral cat companion, Trouble, means she can serve dual purposes as a pet-based class while also giving me the long-awaited chance to play a Siren in the latest edition of Borderlands.
