In addition to its distinctive and easily identifiable artistic flair, the Borderlands series is renowned for boasting an immense collection of one-of-a-kind weapons, a quantity that expands with each new major installment in the series. Currently, it’s been verified that Borderlands 4 will feature billions of guns, disregarding other uncommon loot items. Furthermore, should Borderlands 4 receive DLCs, Seasonal Events, and post-release content similar to its predecessors, the weapon inventory within the game is likely to expand even more in the future.
In the grand scheme of things, the vast number of guns and equipment in Borderlands 4 is undeniably impressive due to the franchise’s background. Yet, a potential issue arises as players might struggle with insufficient vault storage space to accumulate a decent amount of loot. Fortunately, since the game isn’t set to release until late 2025, there’s still an opportunity to address this problem before it becomes a reality.
Borderlands 4’s Billions of Guns Means Billions of Vault Space is Necessary on Day One
Insufficient Vault Space Is a Recurring Problem for the Borderlands Games and Other Looter Shooters
In games similar to the “Borderlands” series, including “Borderlands 3” and “Destiny 2”, a frequent issue that many players have encountered is running out of space to store loot. This problem appears to be persistent among Looter Shooters, and future games are expected to face it as well. To address this issue in their popular titles, both “Borderlands 3” and “Destiny 2” implemented solutions after launch to expand players’ loot storage capacity. Given that “Borderlands 4”, set for release in September 2025, is said to boast the highest number of guns ever seen in a “Borderlands” game, it seems likely that this issue will reach unprecedented levels within the franchise. However, since there’s still ample time before the launch of “Borderlands 4”, Gearbox Software has an opportunity to tackle this problem proactively.
It’s tricky to determine an appropriate amount of storage for the game’s vault since it depends largely on individual players’ preferences. What one player may consider sufficient could leave another wanting more, leading to a constant need for expansion after the game’s release. Given that Borderlands 4 is confirmed to have billions of guns, it seems prudent to design the vault space to accommodate as much content as the game can handle without causing technical issues.
It’s best to have a storage space for each distinct legendary item in Borderlands 4, which should be enough for most players. But since additional loot is expected after the game’s release, it might be wise to prepare by making the vault space as large as possible at launch, to accommodate future content.
Borderlands’ SDUs are the Perfect Solution to a Classic Looter Shooter Problem
In terms of Storage Deck Upgrades (SDUs) from the Borderlands games, it’s not these upgrades that create issues with vault space and inventory management; instead, SDUs could be seen as an ideal resolution to this problem. Compared to other Looter Shooters that restrict this feature behind microtransactions or offer no means for players to expand their storage at all, the Borderlands series’ SDUs allowing players to enlarge their inventory and vault space using in-game currency is a very player-friendly system that also functions as a sink for endgame currency.
The issue isn’t about the SDU system itself, but rather the limitations on its capacity. Therefore, in the case of Borderlands 4, it would be beneficial to retain the SDU system while increasing its maximum storage capacity as much as feasible. Given that the countless weapons in Borderlands 4 will likely amplify this recurring issue to unprecedented levels, it’s wiser to have more vault space than needed, rather than needing more and finding yourself without it.
