It looks like Borderlands 4 might be coming to the new Nintendo Switch 2 on February 27th, according to an early online listing. While Gearbox confirmed Borderlands would be one of the first third-party games on the Switch 2, it hasn’t actually been released for the system yet. That could change very soon, and fans are eager to see how the game performs on the console.
The launch of Borderlands 4 wasn’t without its problems. It faced criticism before release and struggled with performance issues afterward. However, Gearbox has been consistently releasing updates and fixes. Their plans for 2026 look encouraging, suggesting a positive future for the game, especially with the upcoming Switch 2 version, which might be available earlier than anticipated.
Borderlands 4’s Switch 2 Version May Come Out in February 2026
A listing on the Portuguese retailer GamingReplay, first noticed by a Reddit user named venom_daemon, suggests that Borderlands 4 is coming to the Switch 2 on February 27, 2026. The game was initially planned for release on October 3 of last year, but Gearbox delayed it in September 2025. The studio stated the delay was to allow developers more time to refine the game and deliver the best experience for players.
The announcement has generated mixed reactions, with some players worried about how well the game will run on the Switch 2. Many online commenters have pointed out that the game already struggles to perform smoothly even on powerful PCs, raising concerns about its performance on the Switch 2’s less capable hardware. Adding to these concerns, Borderlands 4 experienced a significant drop in player numbers on Steam – a 93% decrease in just two months, which is the largest decline of any main Borderlands title. This drop is likely connected to performance issues like low frame rates and crashes on PC. While these problems were mostly seen on PC and less so on consoles, the Switch 2 is considerably less powerful than current-generation consoles like the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, fueling worries about its ability to handle the game.
As a big fan, I was really interested to see the listing on GamingReplay, and it seems like Borderlands 4 is going to be a ‘game-key card’ title on the Switch 2. Honestly, I figured that might happen considering how big these games are now. But this whole idea of the cartridge just having a code to download the game instead of the game files themselves is kinda weird, and a lot of us are worried about truly owning the game if it’s still digital. Still, it’s not everyone’s take – the director of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth actually thinks these game-key cards are a great way for developers to bring high-quality games to a console like the Switch 2, which doesn’t have the most powerful hardware. Hopefully, the faster loading times with a game-key card will help Borderlands 4 run smoothly, but we’ll just have to wait and see how the port actually performs when it comes out.
Image via Gearbox Despite some lingering uncertainties, a Switch 2 version of the game could help Gearbox boost sales after Borderlands 4 didn’t perform as well as hoped on other systems. If the rumored February 27th announcement date is accurate, we should hear official news soon, and fans will find out if the developers successfully optimized the game for the Switch 2.
