Many players are disappointed with how new characters start in *Borderlands 4*. The ability to skip the main story for fresh Vault Hunters, if you’ve already completed it with another character, isn’t what fans were hoping for. A key issue is that players expected rewards and progress to be shared across all characters on an account, but instead, everything is tied to individual characters.
After a four-year wait, Borderlands 4 launched on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 between September 11th and 12th. A version for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is planned for October 3rd. While critics have generally given the game positive reviews, many players are disappointed due to numerous reports of technical problems and poor performance.
Many Borderlands 4 Players Want More Progression Carryover
Although *Borderlands 4* allows players to quickly reach level 30 with any character after finishing the story, many are frustrated that progress doesn’t carry over between them. Starting a new character feels repetitive because players have to re-explore the map, acquire low-level gear, and rebuild their storage. A major point of discussion is the game’s specialization system; some players expected specializations to be account-wide, benefiting all Vault Hunters, but they currently only apply to individual characters.
Borderlands 4 features four different Vault Hunters, each with a distinct playstyle. Amon is a strong, close-quarters fighter, while Vex prefers to control the battlefield from a distance. Harlowe and Rafa both focus on fast-paced movement, but in different ways: Harlowe is best suited for a classic run-and-gun approach, and Rafa combines turrets with quick melee attacks. Although each character offers diverse skill trees to suit different preferences, some players hesitate to switch characters because they don’t want to lose their progress.

Fans have shared some ideas for how Gearbox could make starting a new game in *Borderlands 4* easier and more enjoyable. These suggestions include letting players access the map and teleport locations unlocked by their other characters, and allowing them to share skill trees and storage upgrades across all their characters.
