Borderlands 4 Releases First Major Balance Patch

Borderlands 4‘s initial large update to improve gameplay balance is now available, adjusting the skills and inherent abilities of each Vault Hunter. The developers at Gearbox Software have committed to continued support and future content for the game, and significant changes like these are now being implemented. After installing this newest patch, all four playable characters in Borderlands 4 might play and feel a little different.

The fourth main Borderlands game has had a rather bumpy ride. Despite a lot of difficult news before it launched, Borderlands 4 still managed to sell over 2.5 million copies in the first couple of weeks. However, ongoing problems with how the game runs, and some statements made by CEO Randy Pitchford, have upset some fans. Despite these challenges, the developers are currently working to improve the game and make it more enjoyable.

On October 2nd, Gearbox shared the newest Borderlands 4 update, detailing changes to how much damage certain action skills and passive abilities do, as well as their critical hit rates. As the developers previously stated, Borderlands 4 is prioritizing improvements to character classes before addressing any potentially overpowered equipment or skills. This patch includes significant damage increases and other enhancements for Amon, with Vex and Rafa also receiving multiple buffs. Harlowe is getting fewer changes-just two-both of which boost the damage output of her Zero-Point skill. The official announcement explains that these adjustments are intended to allow for more varied character builds, keeping a wider range of options effective throughout the game.

Most of this update focuses on adjustments to Vault Hunter skills, but there are also a few smaller changes. One important fix addresses performance problems on some PCs, which have been causing issues with Borderlands 4 and have been widely reported recently. As usual, the Weekly Big Encore Boss, Weekly Wildcard Mission, and the items available at Maurice’s Black Market Vending Machine have all been updated. If you experience any problems after installing the update, the team suggests checking the known issues list or contacting 2K Support.

Players have a lot to anticipate in the future! As outlined in the Borderlands 4 post-launch plan, a Halloween event will add new, powerful weapons and character customizations. Over the coming months and into 2026, we’ll also be releasing both paid downloadable content (DLC) packs and free updates. We recently revealed the first DLC Vault Hunter, C4SH, who is expected to become available sometime in the first three months of 2026.

  • Weekly Big Encore Boss has switched to a tougher variant of a different existing boss with an even more rewarding loot pool for those that take it on.
  • The Weekly Wildcard Mission has changed. These missions feature a guaranteed Legendary drop that you can repeatedly earn to get your ideal roll.
  • Maurice’s Black Market Vending Machine has moved to another location and changed its offerings. Remember, while the location is the same, your vending machine items are different from other players, so ask around to see if someone has the item you’re looking for!

Additional Changes

  • Added auto-clearing of Borderlands 4 stale shaders on version update, preventing performance degradation on some PCs.
