Borderlands 4 Switch 2 Physical Copies Spotted Out in the Wild

A gamer bought a physical copy of Borderlands 4 for the Switch 2 from a seller other than Nintendo, even though the game isn’t officially available on that console yet. Although the copy was genuine, the gamer found that it contained no game data, making it impossible to play or test.

As a huge Borderlands fan, I was so excited for Borderlands 4 to come out in October 2025, and Gearbox had promised it would launch on the Switch 2 at the same time as everything else. But just days before release, they announced the Switch 2 version was delayed indefinitely – they needed more time to polish it up. Then, Take-Two, who own 2K (the Borderlands publisher), explained in February 2026 that they were pausing Switch 2 development to focus on adding content to the game on other consoles and PC. They did say other games would still come to the Switch 2, just not Borderlands 4 right now, which is really disappointing.

A Borderlands 4 Game-Key Card Has Been Discovered

Despite the indefinite delay of the Borderlands 4 Switch version, physical copies of the game have unexpectedly started appearing. A Reddit user named Veloxplayer098 shared a photo of a copy they purchased from a third-party seller, who claimed to have found it at a flea market – though this hasn’t been confirmed. The copy is the Italian version and is rated PEGI 18 for violence, strong language, and in-game purchases. Originally, the Switch version of Borderlands 4 was planned to be distributed using Game-Key Cards, requiring players to download the game before playing.

Veloxplayer098 stated that a Game-Key Card for Borderlands 4 appeared to be genuine, but they noticed the game couldn’t be downloaded on the Nintendo eShop for the Switch 2. This means the game is unplayable on the Switch 2 because it isn’t available for download from Nintendo. Other users suggested the Game-Key Card format likely helped keep production costs down. Given that the PC version of Borderlands 4 needs 100GB of storage, the game’s file size would probably be too large to fit on a standard 64GB Switch 2 Game Card.

Borderlands 4 Still Has Some Lingering Problems

Many players agree that getting Borderlands 4 to work well on the Switch 2 would be difficult, given the ongoing performance problems on PC. Gearbox has acknowledged these PC issues, saying they’ve been challenging to fix even six months after the game’s release. The development team is still working to improve the game and plans to address player feedback with each update.

Players of Borderlands 4 can get three free Golden Keys by using a new SHiFT code before April 14th. While a version for the Switch 2 doesn’t seem likely in the near future, Gearbox may be able to bring the game to that platform eventually.
