According to Gearbox, Borderlands 4 will boast an enormous play area with billions of items and extras at your disposal. Moreover, the studio head, Randy Pitchford, has announced that this installment will offer the largest explorable landmass ever seen in the series’ history.
At PAX East, Pitchford validated this information, and in doing so, he evoked memories of Todd Howard, as well as mentions related to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
Borderlands 4’s World Will Be Seamless And If You Can See It, You Can Go To It

At a PAX East 2025 panel, held through Retbit, Gearbox head Randy Pitchford shared that Borderlands 4 is being crafted within the largest universe they’ve ever created. He emphasized its seamless design, implying no interruptions from load times.
In his promotional efforts for Borderlands 4, Pitchford followed Todd Howard’s approach from the marketing of Skyrim. Back when Skyrim was being advertised, Howard stated that anything players saw in the distance within Skyrim could actually be reached by their character, and it wasn’t just a scenic backdrop. Similarly, Pitchford declared that whatever players see on their screen, whether far off or high up, can be accessed in Borderlands 4.
In contrast to earlier Borderlands games, Borderlands 4 is set on the hitherto unreachable world of Kairos. As per statements made by Pitchford, it’s anticipated that this installment could potentially become the largest game in the Borderlands series.
On the same panel, Pitchford acknowledged that he hasn’t determined the cost of Borderlands 4 as of yet. Given the affordable pricing of Mafia: The Old Country, another game published by Borderlands’ publisher 2K Games, this is a topic generating interest among gamers, especially considering the trend in today’s gaming market.
It’s been clarified by Take-Two Interactive, the company behind 2K Games, that the shift in release date for Borderlands 4 has no connection to Grand Theft Auto 6. In fact, we now know that GTA 6 is set for a release on May 26, 2026.
Borderlands 4 will be released on September 12, 2025 on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
