A key part of every new *Borderlands* game is its group of playable characters, called Vault Hunters. Because players spend the entire game as one of these characters, fans want each new set of Vault Hunters to feel unique – both compared to each other and to all the characters from previous *Borderlands* games. From what we’ve seen, *Borderlands 4* seems to have delivered on this expectation.
The new game, *Borderlands 4*, features four playable characters: Rafa, an Exo-Soldier; Vex, a Siren; Harlowe, a Gravitar; and Amon, a Forgeknight. Each Vault Hunter has distinct abilities and a memorable personality, and Amon, in particular, holds some surprising secrets.
Borderlands 4’s Amon Is Far From a Brutish Barbarian
When It Comes to Amon, Looks Can Be Deceiving
At first look, Amon from *Borderlands 4* seems like a typical barbarian character you’d find in many RPGs inspired by *D&D*, but with a futuristic, post-apocalyptic style. He’s very tall and powerfully built, with a haircut similar to how Viking warriors are often portrayed. Amon wears heavy armor and appears to favor large, close-combat weapons.
For years, characters resembling Amon have frequently been depicted with similar personalities: a strong focus on fighting and honor, but little else. This repetition has created a predictable pattern, and these characters often feel flat or lack depth because they’re defined by so few traits.

Interestingly, Amon doesn’t quite fit the typical ‘brute force’ villain stereotype, which actually helps make the story of *Borderlands 4* more interesting.
Amon Is a Strong, But Sweet Hero
Amon grew up in a cult that worshipped the terrifying monsters from the Vaults in the *Borderlands* universe. When he was young, a creature they worshipped destroyed his entire family and the rest of the cult. Since then, Amon has dedicated his life to preventing others from suffering the same fate. Given his difficult past and strong sense of purpose, many might assume he’s become cynical and distant. However, he’s actually quite the opposite.

In *Borderlands 4*, Amon is surprisingly sociable. Like other Vault Hunters, he interacts with everyone who offers quests. However, Amon goes a step further than characters like Rafa, Harlowe, and Vex – he genuinely enjoys sharing advice and knowledge. Throughout the game, Amon consistently demonstrates a kind and caring personality, often expressed through his simple, friendly dialogue.
Okay, so I was chilling in Kairos one night, and I stepped away from the game for a bit. When I came back, Amon had this really funny line! He basically said, “The night is heavy, and I hope people are using the buddy system.” It’s a cute little nod to making sure you have friends helping you out, you know, like watching each other’s backs when things get tough. It’s a clever reference, and it really fits the game’s vibe!

This small moment really highlights Amon’s kind nature. Despite being a powerful warrior who can quickly defeat many enemies, he’s a hero who genuinely cares about protecting others, even strangers. Ray Chase’s calm and nuanced voice acting also gives Amon a surprising level of sophistication that contrasts with his intimidating appearance.
