Borderlands 4 Will Cut Back on ‘Toilet Humor’ Says Gearbox

As a long-time fan of the Borderlands series, who has spent countless hours looting, shooting, and laughing at the witty humor that makes this game franchise unique, I must say I am both relieved and intrigued by the recent revelations from Gearbox’s Narrative Director, Sam Wrinkler.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m excited to share that in the upcoming chapter of the Borderlands saga, Borderlands 4, Gearbox’s Narrative Director has promised a reduction in the amount of bathroom humor. Instead, we can expect a more mature and engaging storyline, which makes me even more eager for this game!

Information about this topic originated from Sam Wrinkler’s X account (previously Twitter), who is the Narrative Director at Gearbox and has worked on both Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands and Borderlands 3. In reply to a question regarding the humorous aspect of the storyline, Winkler expressed his viewpoint, stating that he can’t discuss much about Borderlands 4, but he stands by his critique of Borderlands 3 having too much bathroom humor.

Later on, I confessed, “Trust me, you won’t find any toilets in the game under my supervision if ‘skibidi ships.’ It would make me shed genuine tears.” Paul Tassi playfully hinted that we might have a gun named Hawk 2A, and another developer asked me if it was true. In that moment, I felt like putting my hand into the garbage disposal.

The Borderlands series has consistently aimed to incorporate plenty of humor, and Winkler’s remarks could be encouraging for those who felt the humor in Borderlands 3 fell short, as it was often criticized for having mediocre or awkward humor. A quick online search (still a popular method, by the way) on Borderlands 3’s humor reveals numerous results of players expressing their disapproval and describing the humor as uncomfortable.

So, for now at least, we’ll have to wait until 2025 to know how many toilet jokes are in the game.

Borderlands 4 is set to launch in 2025 on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X, and PC.
