This article contains story spoilers for both Borderlands 2 and Borderlands 3.
At Gearbox’s PAX West event for Borderlands 4, there were many unexpected moments, but none caught everyone’s attention quite like the unveiling of the game’s initial Story Pack titled “Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned“. Marketed as a cosmic horror expansion with a grimmer, bloodier atmosphere, this Borderlands 4 DLC could potentially signal a dramatic change in the series’ tone. However, the title itself might hint at something more substantial, possibly suggesting that a much-loved character may not make it to the end of the main game.
In the initial expansion pack revealed together with the post-release plan for Borderlands 4, players can expect to delve into a fresh area called Kairos, encounter a new Vault Hunter character, chase after more legendary loot, and enjoy a range of cosmetic items as extras. While these elements seem captivating, there’s an intriguing question that arises with this Story Pack, specifically regarding the narrative consequences of Ellie adopting the title “Mad” and the possible effects on her mother Moxxi.
The Title of Borderlands 4’s First Story Pack Has Dark Implications

It’s worth noting that Ellie’s new title, “Mad Ellie,” from the game “Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, could have two possible interpretations. The first, which seems less intriguing, aligns with a cosmic horror-themed DLC, suggesting that the horrifying cosmic forces might be driving Ellie insane.
The second interpretation, however, is more intriguing and potentially conspiratorial. Given that Moxxi, Ellie’s renowned mother, has long been known as “Mad Moxxi,” the sudden appearance of the “Mad” prefix in Ellie’s title could hint at some significant change within the game’s universe.
Interestingly, Ellie generally distinguishes herself from Moxxi’s lifestyle, so it’s intriguing to see her adopt a name associated with her mother all of a sudden.
Currently, Gearbox hasn’t given any hint about Moxxi’s future in Borderlands 4, but since she’s been spotted alongside Zane in the trailers, it’s certain that she’ll be part of the game. Given her significant role in the series up to now, the mere suggestion of her demise would mark a substantial change for a franchise that has consistently featured Moxxi in every edition so far. If indeed she’s moving on, it would mean saying goodbye to one of Borderlands’ most memorable characters.
What The Mad Ellie DLC Pack Could Mean for Moxxi in Borderlands 4

Moxxi, with her connections to almost every Vault Hunter, her talent for double entendres, and numerous ex-spouses, has become one of the most identifiable characters in the series. Her possible exit (in any form it might occur) would significantly alter the series’ overall mood. If Ellie takes over the “Mad” title because of Moxxi’s demise, either in the storyline of ‘Borderlands 4’ or a DLC, it would be a daring narrative choice for the franchise, which, given the circumstances, might not necessarily be positive.
Gearbox Closing the Book on Moxxi Would Be a Risky Choice
Considering the affection fans have for Moxxi, it might be hazardous for Gearbox to retire her character. Eliminating a fan favorite like Moxxi, especially if done clumsily, could potentially drive away long-time supporters, particularly those who view her as more significant than newer characters such as Ellie. However, it’s important to note that the ranking of Borderlands NPCs varies among fans, but the sentiment that Moxxi holds a special place is certainly plausible.

In the game series titled “Borderlands“, there have been instances where cherished characters meet untimely ends, with Roland’s demise at the hands of Handsome Jack being a particularly moving moment. However, the manner in which Maya perishes in “Borderlands 3” is often criticized as being poorly handled.
The positive implication is that if the transition is successful, it could open up numerous new storylines for exploration. Even following her brother Scooter’s passing (a popular character), Ellie’s character hasn’t significantly changed, but with Moxxi absent, there will likely be some alteration. Gearbox seems to be moving towards a more complex and mature narrative style for the upcoming Borderlands 4, which, coupled with the cosmic horror theme of the expansion, offers many opportunities for Ellie to shine in ways she hasn’t previously.
At this moment, it’s unclear if Moxxi’s story will continue in either Borderlands 4 or the Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned DLC. If legacy characters handing over the mantle to a new generation is done skillfully, it could breathe new life into the franchise. However, given that the series hasn’t handled this aspect flawlessly in the past, fans are cautiously optimistic. We’ll have to wait for the game’s launch to see how daring Gearbox decides to be, but the potential consequences for Borderlands 4 are significant and intriguing.
