Summary
- Borderlands 4’s Timekeeper may finally redeem subpar antagonists like the Calypso Twins in Borderlands 3.
- The Timekeeper is teased as a more terrifying villain with a dark force and mysterious potential.
- Early signs suggest Timekeeper could fill the void left by the predictability and annoyance of the Calypso Twins.
As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the gritty and chaotic world of Pandora, I can confidently say that the Borderlands series has always set the bar high when it comes to villains. The charismatically twisted Handsome Jack from Borderlands 2 was a hard act to follow, but the Calypso Twins in Borderlands 3 were unfortunately not up to the task.
In simpler terms, the Borderlands series has consistently raised the bar for video game antagonists, with Handsome Jack from Borderlands 2 standing out as particularly noteworthy due to his enchanting wickedness and unpredictable ruthlessness. This made the narrative of Borderlands 2 even more engaging and intense. However, when the Calypso Twins took over in Borderlands 3, they had a tough act to follow after Jack’s memorable performance. Regrettably, their characters failed to meet the series’ storytelling potential. But, a new villain in hypothetical Borderlands 4 might just be capable of making the Calypso Twins seem more compelling.
Although not much is revealed about him yet, it appears that Borderlands 4’s Timekeeper is shaping up to be a more menacing villain than the Calypso Twins. A brief glimpse of the Timekeeper in the latest gameplay trailer suggests a potentially darker adversary whose enigmatic nature adds to his intimidation factor. If these initial hints are any guide, the Timekeeper could fill the void left by the Calypso Twins and provide fans with an antagonist worthy of following in the footsteps of Handsome Jack.
Borderlands 4’s Timekeeper Already Looks More Menacing Than the Calypso Twins
Borderlands 3’s Calypso Twins Were Far Too Annoying and Non-Threatening
It’s well-known that the villain Handsome Jack in Borderlands 2 was hard to top, and the Calypso Twins faced high expectations as the next main antagonists in the mainline Borderlands series. Although this could explain their negative reception, they might have been disappointing even without these expectations. Their grating personalities and lack of menacing presence made them seem like they were trying too hard to emulate Handsome Jack, a noble ambition but one that ultimately led to their downfall. In striving to be the next Handsome Jack, they inadvertently highlighted every reason why they weren’t him.
Contrary to the limited information available, the Timekeeper from Borderlands 4 appears to be standing out as a more fearsome antagonist compared to the Calypso Twins.
As a fan, I can’t help but notice a stark contrast between the captivating appeal of Handsome Jack and the underwhelming reception of the Calypso Twins. While Handsome Jack was richly layered with a complex backstory and an unforgettable charm that sent shivers down our spines, the Calypso Twins, unfortunately, felt rather flat. They seemed to focus primarily on power and fame, lacking the intricate character development that could have made them truly captivating.
As a gamer, I found the outrageous characters of the Calyposo Twins in Borderlands 3 to be more grating than menacing. Their dialogue was irritatingly satirical and their over-the-top behavior was cringeworthy, making them feel less like villains and more like obstacles that made me roll my eyes instead of feeling threatened. To add insult to injury, the actions of the Calypso Twins throughout the game’s story were predictable, which was a stark contrast to the unpredictable psychotic antics of Handsome Jack. It’s a real shame that the Calypso Twins had to follow in Handsome Jack’s footsteps because they might have been more tolerable if he hadn’t set such a high bar.
Borderlands 4’s Timekeeper Already Looks Like a Truly Sinister Villain
Despite the reasons for the Calypso Twins in Borderlands 3 being unimpressive as antagonists, they are still considered the weakest villains in the Borderlands series. On the contrary, the villain of Borderlands 4, the Timekeeper, appears to be much more intimidating than the Calypso Twins ever aspired to be, and possibly even Handsome Jack. A significant aspect of the Timekeeper’s threatening demeanor stems from the enigma that still shrouds his character, as very little information about him has been revealed thus far, and his appearance alone hints at an otherworldly power not to be underestimated.
As Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox Software, suggests, the Timekeeper appears to be a far more menacing and ominous villain than Handsome Jack, and based on what we’ve seen in the latest gameplay trailer for Borderlands 4, it seems that his assessment might indeed be accurate.
If the enigmatic Timekeeper indeed possesses a darker side as suggested, then Borderlands 4 stands poised to restore the series’ shattered world. The Calypso Twins may have inadvertently given the Borderlands saga just what it lacked: an insightful depiction of what a Borderlands antagonist should avoid, while also offering a model for how one should be crafted. The intrigue surrounding the Timekeeper’s character and motives already distinguishes him, and if his complexity can rival Handsome Jack’s, he could elevate the series to new heights by setting an even higher standard.
