As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of character designs that range from the sublime to the downright ridiculous. However, when it comes to Borderlands 4, I must admit I find myself torn between excitement and apprehension.

As a die-hard fan of the Borderlands series, I must admit that the buzz surrounding Borderlands 4 has been palpable for quite some time now. We’ve been left in the dark about its existence for so long that the mere hint of its arrival has set our hearts racing. With such heightened excitement building up, I expected a wave of positive reactions when it finally made its appearance.

In Borderlands 4, both familiar faces and fresh enemies seem to maintain the distinctive style and imaginative appeal that fans have long associated with the Borderlands world. Consequently, it’s possible that the non-player characters in Borderlands 4 could avoid the criticism that the playable characters in previous games didn’t escape.

Borderlands 4’s NPCs May Avoid the Criticism Its Vault Hunters Garnered

Borderlands 4’s Vault Hunters Have Been Criticized for Their Blandness

Although details about the gameplay of Borderlands 4 are scarce, its Vault Hunters have faced considerable criticism for their unremarkable appearance. Unfortunately, this may not be surprising given that past versions of Borderlands had more diverse Vault Hunters. Comparison is often the most common form of criticism, and in this case, it’s evident that each of Borderlands 4’s four Vault Hunters resemble one another quite a bit. They lack the unique traits and characteristics that made previous characters stand out. Essentially, Borderlands 4’s Vault Hunters seem to be missing a certain appeal, and they appear as ordinary individuals rather than special or distinctive ones.

Previously, characters such as Zer0 and Krieg stood out uniquely due to their individual looks. However, the new Vault Hunters in Borderlands 4 appear to be less flamboyant compared to their predecessors.

Borderlands 4’s NPCs Already Seem to Have Some Cool Designs

Despite some negative feedback about the design of Borderlands 4’s Vault Hunters, the sequel’s NPCs seem to be escaping such criticism and may continue to do so upon release. For example, one returning character, Zane Flynt, has undergone a change in the sequel, sporting a longer beard, a new hairstyle, and what appears to be a shawl instead of his usual jacket. Additionally, a character clad in dazzling white and gold apparel that appears towards the end of Borderlands 4’s latest gameplay trailer showcases one of the game’s more striking appearances; however, it remains uncertain what role this character will assume.

As a devoted fan, I must say that the ominous design of Borderlands 4’s new villain, the Timekeeper, sends shivers down my spine. His menacing appearance certainly matches the danger he seems to embody. Interestingly, many of the game’s adversaries appear more visually captivating than the Vault Hunters. In fact, the enemies showcased in the recent trailer for Borderlands 4 seem significantly more intimidating than the characters we’ll be controlling on our adventure. It seems as though the developers are trying to create a sense of vulnerability this time around, making us feel like we’re not invincible, capable of defeating any adversaries we encounter, but rather, they make us question whether we’re truly up to the challenge.

In simpler terms, the unique charm that the characters from Borderlands 4 seem to be missing is that they appear more ordinary or typical, rather than having any exceptional qualities.

In Borderlands 4, it’s the non-playable characters that are generating excitement instead of the new Vault Hunters. These distinctive, visually appealing NPCs, some returning and others new, seem to embody the character design fans have come to love in the series. It remains uncertain if this focus will sustain interest in the game over time, but there’s a glimmer of hope that Borderlands 4 is committed to crafting a world brimming with unforgettable characters, preserving the franchise’s reputation for creative character design.
