Borderlands Characters You Either Love or Hate

Borderlands Characters You Either Love or Hate

Highlights

  • Not all characters in the Borderlands series are loved, with some being seen as annoying or grating by fans.
  • Tyreen & Troy Calypso may be obnoxious with their influencer personalities, but they are villains for a reason.
  • Characters like Ava, Janey Springs, Pickle, Moxxi, Tiny Tina, Handsome Jack, and Claptrap all have their polarizing traits.

As a seasoned Vault Hunter who’s traversed the treacherous landscapes of Pandora and its moon, I’ve had my fair share of encounters with the eccentric characters that inhabit this post-apocalyptic wasteland. Each one is as unique as the loot they drop, but some stand out more than others.

In the Borderlands series, there’s a unique bond with fans, as opinions about the characters appear to be evenly divided, with both praise and criticism for each game’s personalities. For instance, certain characters might be perceived as too joke-heavy or having annoying personas, which can make them less favorable among some players.

In the Borderlands series, there are certain personalities that receive more criticism than they should, yet their divisive nature is predictable given the game’s emphasis on vibrant, non-stop chattering characters. For some players, these individuals create a lasting impact, though not always in a favorable way.

8 Tyreen & Troy Calypso

The Mean Siren Tag-Team Of ECHOnet Influencers

  • Featured in: Borderlands 3

In Borderlands 3, the primary villains had big shoes to fill following the departure of Handsome Jack in Borderlands 2. The twin leaders, Tyreen and Troy, were from the Children of the Vault and possessed Siren abilities that enabled them to drain life energy from others. Their powers bestowed on them an overbearing confidence and a charismatic influence, making them quite boastful personalities.

Tyreen and Troy could come across as slightly irritating with their ECHOnet streamer personas, yet in their roles as cult leaders, they’ve managed to gather a legion of devoted followers. Regardless of personal feelings towards them, it’s clear why they are villains – their powers are formidable and undeniable.

7 Ava

Maya’s Apprentice Who Doesn’t Earn Her Stay

  • Featured in: Borderlands 3

In the gripping world of Borderlands 3, I embark on an adventure that some players might have overlooked, delving into the heart-wrenching tale of Ava, an orphan who’s lost everything. As I journey alongside her, my heart swells with empathy for this resilient young girl striving to endure in a merciless cosmos. Fortunately, I find solace in the arms of Maya, the Siren, who takes me under her wing as an apprentice, teaching me the skills necessary to navigate this unforgiving universe. With dreams of one day joining the ranks of the Sirens, I walk with Ava on the path to survival and self-discovery.

Ava’s character shares some common stereotypes seen in many young roles. She tends to be quite boisterous and annoying at times, and it seems that the story often caters to her unfairly, without proper justification. Despite having the capacity for a complex and empathetic Siren, who is dealing with grief and inexperience, this aspect of her character hasn’t been fully developed as expected, leading some viewers to perceive her as irritating and unyielding in her behavior.

6 Janey Springs

The Loud And Proud Junk Dealer

  • Featured in: Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Tales from the Borderlands

As a gamer, I’ve got a soft spot for Elpis’ quirky mechanic character in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. Her affection for the black market and women alike adds an interesting dynamic to the game. She plays her part in advancing the storyline effectively, and her clever mind often comes in handy when tackling missions. However, players might find themselves grinding their teeth as they navigate through her side missions. These tasks can become a bit tedious and repetitive at times.

Janey Springs’ depth of personality might not be as profound as others, and her main flaw lies in her tendency to talk excessively. In essence, she can come off as quite persistent in her interactions, and her frequent jokes and advances can become rather repetitive.

5 Pickle

A Kid Who Wants To Fit In, But He Tends To Talk Too Much

  • Featured in: Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel

In the world of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Pickle is a character from Elpis who might send chills down the spines of many series enthusiasts. However, is this negative opinion fair towards Pickle? With a heartrending past following the demise of his parents and the loss of his sister, it appears that even the scavengers of the Outlands Canyon share a disdain for him similar to how some players find him irritating.

1) It’s harsh to see how quickly adults, meaning the players, turn on Pickle given his youth. The main issue with Pickle isn’t his verbosity or fondness for using complex phrases, but rather the fact that his repetitive side-quests lack any sort of interactive appeal.

4 Moxxi

The Flirtatious And Sometimes Self-Serving Hostess Of Too Many Bars

  • Featured in: Borderlands, Borderlands 2, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Tales from the Borderlands, Borderlands 3

From her beginnings in the original Borderlands game, Moxxi has been a constant presence across various ventures throughout the galaxy. You’ll find her on Pandora, off it, or even in places you didn’t know she could be. Her recurring appearances can make one think that she’s omnipresent, but the trope of Moxxi having numerous spouses and various businesses and bars can become repetitive after a while.

In the world of Borderlands, Moxxi is typically featured, especially when a new installment comes out. However, although she’s often central, some players might find her somewhat divisive. Despite being multifaceted isn’t necessarily a flaw, Moxxi’s past betrayal of Jack (when he wasn’t yet villainous) and her knack for slipping into any role assigned to her can make her character seem slightly predictable and worn-out.

3 Tiny Tina

An Explosive Personality Who Might Come Off Too Strong

  • Featured in: Borderlands 2, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Borderlands 3, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands

Tina, another character in the franchise, often masks her past traumas with an overabundance of humor and an erratic demeanor. Her backstory as a vindictive child who was sold by others to Hyperion adds depth to her motives, particularly when one considers that she’s essentially had to learn survival skills on Pandora, relying mainly on explosives and crumpets since childhood.

One aspect that players might not like about Tina is her personality, as she adds to the list of characters who love to yap and make random jokes that might not fit their own sense of humor. Tina does have a charm about her, and it’s pretty chuckle-worthy to hear crude and violent jokes come out of a kid.

2 Handsome Jack

Hyperion’s CEO Who Hides His Scars Behind A Mask And Humorous Confidence

  • Featured in: Borderlands 2, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Tales from the Borderlands

In the Borderlands series, none other than Handsome Jack stands out as the most memorable antagonist. Right from the start when he intrudes into players’ personal space via ECHonet messages, it becomes evident that his intention is to cause trouble for Vault Hunters. However, there’s a certain charm to Jack’s sarcasm and relentless teasing of Vault Hunters that makes him amusing, which explains why he is both adored and despised simultaneously.

Jack, a character from the Borderlands series, is a villain that players can’t help but despise yet adore simultaneously. Some go so far as to suggest that his repeated betrayals have given him just cause. Jack is often debated among fans as to whether he is a delusional hero or a full-blown antagonist, due to his intricate personality.

1 Claptrap

An Intentionally Annoying Hyperion Bot Who Succeeds At His Function

  • Featured in: Borderlands, Borderlands 2, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Tales from the Borderlands, Borderlands 3, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands

It’s tough to match the iconic status of Claptrap, but is it really desired? Claptrap is well-known in the series for being intentionally irritating and dislikable, which only enhances his humor and appeal. Not even a sweet occasion like a birthday party for Claptrap would attract guests, and some might prefer solitude over his company.

As a dedicated fan, I must admit that Claptrap’s quirky humor and constant chatter can be endearing, but there are times when even I struggle to tolerate him. Some players find him downright unbearable and see him more as an annoyance than a companion. His demands of minions and his overreactions to simple obstacles like stairs only serve to fuel this sentiment. In such situations, many would prefer to ignore or steer clear of him altogether.
