Beyond secret alien repositories and underhanded business tactics, Borderlands revolves around the enigmatic Sirens. These are an otherworldly power in the cosmos that possess formidable alien talents.
As a gamer, I find myself in a world where only six Siren entities can exist simultaneously. These beings possess extraordinary abilities that are transferable upon their demise. Such powers make them incredibly valuable and desirable, leading some to wield them as powerful leaders, while others become victims of ruthless plots.
Amongst the diverse cast of characters in the Borderlands series, the Sirens can be either antagonists or playable heroes. However, which one among them exhibits the greatest toughness and coolness?
11. Troy Calypso
The Parasitic Bad Boy
In contrast to common sirens, Troy Calypso stands out as the solitary male among them, and is often portrayed as a major adversary in Borderlands 3. Typically, he prefers to remain in the shadows, letting his sister hog the limelight when it comes to the Children of the Vault.
Originally, he was a conjoined twin with his sister, but they were separated. However, he retained his unique talent – the capacity to absorb the abilities of other sirens, which he can then utilize himself.
This individual is incredibly unsavory. After taking the life of Maya, he develops an inflated ego that nearly claims his own sister’s life. Despite being formidable in combat and providing a challenging boss battle, he lacks any charm on screen, and it’s a relief when he’s eliminated from the story.
10. Tyreen Calypso
Cult Influencer Extraordinaire
Tyreen, among the Calypso twins, tends to be more vocal, and she is the primary antagonist in Borderlands 3. Her intention is to utilize her thieving abilities to seize the powers within Pandora’s massive vault that are connected to the Destroyer.
Her bold, attention-grabbing approach as an influencer can be quite overpowering, to put it mildly, yet she demonstrates a formidable strength. She showed this strength by seizing Lilith’s powers right from the start of the game.
If there wasn’t enough reason to dislike her before, it turns out that she murdered her father, Typhon DeLeon, who was a cherished original Vault Hunter. When you eventually confront her, you discover that she has transformed into a grotesque creature, fused with the Destroyer.
May the Calypso twins rest in peace and never return.
9. Commandant Steele
Villain, Turned Monster, Turned Museum Piece
In simple terms, Commandant Steele is the main villain in the initial Borderlands game. Among the Sirens, she’s the one we know the least about. Though she initiated the opening of the first Vault on Pandora, her Siren abilities remain a mystery to us as we never witnessed them directly.
Following her fatal encounter with the Destroyer, she continues to appear even after death, notably in the downloadable content Claptrap’s Robot Revolution and Tales From the Borderlands. Despite limited information shared about her throughout these appearances, she leaves a significant mark.
Had she been adequately prepared for the Destroyer, she would have successfully achieved her objectives as she possessed enough strength to take charge of the Crimson Lance, guiding Atlas in their quest for the vault key.
Since Steele’s full powers as a siren remain unseen, there’s a strong chance that more chapters are still left in her compelling tale.
8. Nyriad
The Ancient Voice
Even though Nyriad passed away long ago, her influence remains potent within the world of Borderlands 3. Scattered across the game are cryptic eridian inscriptions that she had purposely left as a cautionary message for future civilizations.
These audio clips recount the tale of her imprisoning the destructor and annihilating the Eridians. There’s also a suggestion that she could have been the first wielder of the Calypso twins’ parasitic abilities.
Nyriad’s tale is deeply moving, complex, and captivating. Her works serve as our primary source of knowledge regarding the Eridians.
Without a doubt, she was someone to take seriously, and her life sparked off the chain of events that unfolded during the games.
7. Maya
The Phaselocking Mentor
In simpler terms, Maya is one of two characters you can control in the game Borderlands 2, and she made her debut there. Later on, she became a significant non-player character (NPC) in Borderlands 3. Her unique ability, known as Siren Phaselock, allows her to pull targets into another dimension.
Following the occurrences in the second installment, she goes back to her planet, Athenas, where she takes up the role of its guardian. There, she meets a young, cunning thief called Ava.
One emotional aspect of the game involves the complex, caregiving bond she has with Ava, similar to a parent, and her romantic connection with Krieg, which are among the saddest elements portrayed.
Although she’s not the most captivating figure, she significantly influences the plot and triggers several heart-wrenching scenes.
6. Ava
5. Plucky Little Nobody
In Borderlands 3, Ava serves as a young, resourceful apprentice under Maya, who is learning the ropes of being a thief. She possesses the ability to wield phaselock siren powers that were passed down to her. Due to unfortunate circumstances, she was left orphaned at an early age and had to rely on her quick thinking and survival skills to make it through life.
On Athenas, she attempts to pilfer from Maya but ends up being fostered by her instead. It so happens that Maya discerns Ava possesses the potential to wield her powers in the future, making her presence even more significant.
Despite being just a teen, Lilith appoints Ava as the head of the Crimson Raiders in Borderlands 3, indicating significant developments for Ava. I can’t help but hope for more scenes involving her and Tiny Tina in the game.
4. Angel
The Tragic Traitor
In simpler terms, Angel is Handsome Jack’s sorrowful offspring and the guiding voice for the Vault Hunters throughout the first two games. From the moment you step foot on Pandora, she aids you in your journey while enduring cruel experiments at the hands of Jack.
She disguises herself as an artificial intelligence during the ‘siren’ phase shift, a skill that grants her technopathy. At every turn, she interacts with devices, opens doors, and employs her abilities to assist you in various ways.
Her influence spans the globe, making her one of the most formidable sirens known. Unveiling her true identity was a mind-blowing revelation that ultimately led to her own demise and Roland’s as well.
Her tale is deeply moving, and it’s hard not to feel a sense of loss for her presence, as if her words were still whispering in your ear after she was no longer with us.
3. Lilith
Our Fearless Leader
In the thrilling world of Borderlands, it’s me – a gamer – who takes on the role of Lilith, the one and only Firehawk. I’m not just any character; I’m the first playable Siren, leading the Crimson Raiders with courage and grit, and I’m the main NPC in Borderlands 2 and 3, guiding players through their epic adventures!
Over the course of her development, her skill, which initially functions like “phase walking,” transforms into a teleportation-like capability as she becomes more powerful. At first, she can become invisible, but as she grows stronger, she might even risk her own life to transport an entire moon.
Lilith serves as our perspective on the world. Her motivations fuel her quest for vengeance against Handsome Jack and the mission to close the Vault of Awesomeness.
Though she might be the most outstanding siren, there are a couple of others I’d rather grab a drink with over her.
2. Tanis
Totally Insane Technomancer
Patricia Tanis is the scientist who studies the mysterious vaults. She makes her appearance in the initial game, but it’s not until Borderlands 3 that she transforms into a Siren.
After the unfortunate passing of Angel, her siren abilities have been passed down to someone else who seems strangely fitted by them given her manic brilliance. Technomancy was potent in Angel’s control, but when merged with Tanis’ extraordinary intellect, it could make her virtually invincible.
Tanis stands out among the game’s characters as exceptionally remarkable, with her fragmented sanity bringing a mix of humor and fear. She frequently serves as a stark warning of the consequences of vault-hunting, yet remains one of your crucial teammates.
In Borderlands 3, Tanis was still discovering her abilities. Therefore, it’s reasonable to anticipate that she will become a significant and powerful character in Borderlands 4.
1. Amara
Crime Fighting Celeb
As a galactic guardian in Borderlands 3, I’m Amara – the third playable Siren. With my phase-shifting abilities, I summon a force of spectral energy fists to do battle. My mission? To shield the helpless and fight for justice across the cosmos.
Apart from her time spent on treasure-hunting expeditions and heroic deeds, Amara has a certain star quality. Scattered throughout the game are records known as echo logs, which offer insights into how she navigates her stardom amidst her unique lifestyle.
Amara’s character provides a refreshing contrast to the typically somber sirens usually portrayed. She’s known for her wit, playful spirit, and significant role as a combatant.
As a fan of close-quarters combat with shotguns, I enjoy being right in the thick of things whenever I can. Amara, with her tank-like attributes, is a formidable character, and her voiceovers make playing her an enjoyable experience. Personally, I’m eagerly anticipating spending more time with her in Borderlands 4.
