Borderlands Is A Flop After Disastrous Opening Weekend

As a hardcore gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant and chaotic world of Borderlands, I must admit that I was incredibly hyped for the live-action adaptation. The anticipation built over the years as we watched the development of this cinematic universe unfold. However, the dismal performance at the box office has left me feeling like a bandit who’s just been looted by an S-Tier mob.

Based on a recent report from Variety, it appears that the global box office earnings for the opening weekend of the live-action Borderlands movie adaption came in at only $16.5 million.

The film’s earnings are significantly lower than its production cost of $115 million, and when you add in marketing and distribution expenses of an additional $30 million, it suggests a challenging financial situation for the movie.

As a dedicated gamer sharing some insights, I’ve learned from reliable studio resources that about 60% of the budget for the upcoming “Borderlands” movie was secured through international pre-sales. Despite this significant investment, it seems the film didn’t quite live up to our expectations.

On August 9, 2024, the movie, produced by Lionsgate and directed by Eli Roth, premiered. Although it raked in the most revenue within domestic territories, it managed to secure only a modest $8.8 million from a total of 3,125 cinemas.

As a dedicated gamer, I eagerly awaited the release of Borderlands, but unfortunately, the game’s debut weekend left much to be desired. The influx of negative reviews from both critics and fellow gamers was overwhelming. To make matters worse, on the eve of its premiere, the Rotten Tomatoes score for critical reception plummeted to a shocking zero.

By February 2024, studios had disclosed their intentions for a Borderlands film universe. However, these plans might face significant challenges following the underperformance of the initial movie at the box office. Despite this, many fans and casual viewers commended the cast, particularly Cate Blanchett’s acting performance.

As a longtime video game enthusiast, I must say that I am both excited and intrigued by the recent news of upcoming movie adaptations based on various IPs (intellectual properties). Having spent countless hours immersed in the rich narratives and captivating worlds of these games, it’s thrilling to see them potentially translated onto the big screen.
