Borderlands Krieg Actor on His Approach to Realizing the Character

As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the Borderlands movie has been one of the most anticipated adaptations for me and many other fans. The world of Borderlands is a rollercoaster ride of chaos, comedy, and tragedy, and it’s always been fascinating to see how these elements intertwine.

The “Borderlands” film is set to premiere in cinemas, allowing fans to embark on the thrilling journey of some of its beloved characters in a dynamic live-action rendition. The universe of “Borderlands” has consistently captivated audiences with its unique blend of chaos and comedy as well as moments of deep sadness. With numerous intricate backstories and diverse motivations among its extensive cast of eccentric characters, the series skillfully combines multiple narrative threads in a way that is both amusing and heartwarming.

Florian Munteanu, famed boxer and actor who played Viktor Drago in “Creed 2” and “Creed 3”, Razor Fist in Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”, is now set to portray Krieg, the psychotic character from the “Borderlands” series, in the movie adaptation. In a departure from his previous roles, Munteanu discussed with Game Rant about how his passion for the series, understanding of the character, and fighting abilities enabled him to bring the on-screen version of the beloved Krieg from the games to life.

How Florian Munteanu Embodied Krieg in the Borderlands Movie

Why Krieg Was the Perfect Role

Munteanu expressed that he had been an avid admirer of the franchise even before getting involved in the project. His fandom grew significantly after the second installment introduced Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck DLC for Borderland 3 expanded upon his story. He mentioned finding common ground with Krieg’s imposing physique, but also being drawn to his tragic backstory and complex personality, which gives the character depth beyond initial impressions.

About portraying Krieg in the movie, Munteanu discussed how he had to adapt to Krieg’s jerky movements and using an unusual weapon for the role, which was new to him. This made filming some of the action-packed fight sequences more challenging, but in the end, it proved to be a rewarding experience.

“Approximately three weeks before filming began, I familiarized myself with his unique combat techniques and his erratic nature. His movements are distinct, almost unpredictable, as they’re mostly driven by instinct rather than deliberate thought or planning.”

“It’s not necessary to overthink it; feel free to let your imagination run wild. This is something I found incredibly enjoyable.”

Fully Embracing Krieg and the Man Behind the Mask

As a devoted fan, I can tell you that each Borderlands psycho sports an iconic mask, and Krieg is no exception to this rule. It was quite a task to incorporate this element into my performance, as the mask plays a significant role in the character’s persona. Munteanu shared his experience, explaining that initially, it was somewhat of a challenge to find the ideal design and material for Krieg’s mask that offered the perfect fit and mobility. He experimented with different prototypes until he found a suitable blend that met all the requirements.

When I donned the mask during filming, Munteanu shared an amusing anecdote about one of my co-stars who was taken aback when they discovered that beneath this facade, I was pouring my heart and soul into the role. Despite being mostly hidden behind it, I was giving it my all.

As a gamer, I found myself in Roland’s car, and Kevin Hart swiveled to face me while I delivered my lines. That moment marked the first time he got a peek at what I was up to behind the mask, and let me tell you, his reaction was priceless because he just couldn’t wrap his head around the wild antics I was pulling off. To set the record straight, I wasn’t ‘hiding’ behind that mask; instead, I was fully embracing it and bringing it to life.
