Though it appeared unexpectedly, Borderlands Mobile is quickly gaining attention from fans of the series. While it includes common mobile game features – like a combination of spoken and text-based dialogue, and a resource-collecting system similar to those in Tales from the Borderlands and Borderlands 3 featuring the character Vaughn – it still feels like a genuine Borderlands experience. The game retains the signature art style, satisfying gunplay and loot system, and the quirky, talkative enemies of Pandora. Surprisingly, Borderlands Mobile launched with more content than Borderlands 4 has after several months in development.
Borderlands Mobile is Filled With Content
The surprise release of Borderlands Mobile raises questions about what the “coming soon” labels mean for character classes and cosmetic items. Are they for content you can unlock, or are they placeholders for features that might not be in the game yet? Even with what’s currently available – the Summoner class and existing content – Borderlands Mobile seems to offer the variety that Borderlands 4 fans have been hoping for. Here are the game modes you can play:
- Campaign
- Tower of Terror
- Raids
- Faction Wars
- Bounties
- Circles of Slaughter
- Psycholands
Short, focused missions are a good way to teach players how everything works in this mobile Borderlands game – it takes a little while to get used to the automatic shooting – but the variety of other content is what will really keep players engaged. New modes, like Circles of Slaughter, will appear regularly, encouraging players to return often. There’s also a battle pass system that fans who enjoy collecting cosmetic items and Borderlands’ Vault Cards will likely enjoy leveling up.

It’s surprising to learn that Borderlands Mobile launched with a raid boss right away. While raid bosses were common in games like Borderlands 2, recent Borderlands releases haven’t included them at launch. For example, Borderlands 3‘s first raid boss didn’t appear until November 2019, and Borderlands 4 only has one, added in December 2023. Many players feel Borderlands 4 is lacking in content, especially since its latest DLC didn’t add a new raid boss. Borderlands Mobile, however, seems to be addressing this issue by including a raid boss much faster than recent mainline games.
Like the game Destiny 2, Borderlands Mobile lets you improve items and break down weapons to get materials, adding a surprising amount of complexity to the mobile experience.
Borderlands Mobile May Have a Brighter Future Ahead of It Than BL4 Does
The recent Borderlands 4 DLC, Mad Ellie, felt a bit short, and it’s only halfway through the Season Pass content, which is causing some concern for the game’s future. Gearbox might address the criticism about Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned being too brief by making the next expansion more substantial. Hopefully, the Horrors of Kairos event served as a learning opportunity for better seasonal content, and the upcoming Takedowns will be a success. However, considering everything released since launch, there’s still reason to be worried about what’s to come.
Unlike previous attempts at ongoing support in the main Borderlands games, Borderlands Mobile appears to be giving players exactly what they want. The launch day raid boss hints at a steady stream of challenging content, and features like the replayable Circles of Slaughter and the upcoming Tower of Terror should keep players engaged in the hunt for loot. The main Borderlands games have often struggled to balance long-term support, never fully committing to a live-service model and leaving players wanting more. Borderlands Mobile, however, seems to understand how to appeal to those disappointed with the direction of the core games, and its complete launch could set it up for lasting success.
