The mobile version of Borderlands unexpectedly appeared on the iOS app store, giving iPhone players a chance to try it out for a limited time. Players are currently unsure when the test period ends, if their progress will be saved for the full game, and how much of the game will be free. Despite these unknowns, Borderlands fans are enjoying the surprisingly full-featured experience, which includes a day one raid boss and ‘Circles of Slaughter’ challenges. The gameplay is also remarkably smooth. However, the game isn’t perfect; some players feel the characters aren’t as engaging as in previous titles, and the popular character Tiny Tina doesn’t quite feel like herself.
So, I’m really excited about Borderlands Mobile! It’s being made by Zynga, but the awesome folks at Gearbox are helping out a ton with things like the story, how it looks, and keeping it true to the Borderlands vibe. They’re basically making sure it feels like a real Borderlands game, which is a huge relief!
Borderlands Mobile Recasts Tiny Tina, and It’s Hard to Get Used To
Okay, so I just jumped into Borderlands Mobile, and it starts with one of those cool animated cutscenes. But this time, it’s different! It’s not just Marcus doing the talking. There’s this really rough, kinda creepy female voice setting the scene, and it confirms the game takes place after the events of Borderlands 3 and the Calypso Twins being taken down. Honestly, the voice didn’t sound like anyone I recognized – it sounded like some random Psycho! But then I started reading the subtitles, and noticed some weird capitalizations and phrases… and I immediately wondered, ‘Wait… is that Tiny Tina?!’ It was a pretty shocking moment, and I’m definitely curious to see where they’re going with that.
Okay, so after you get used to the gameplay in the beginning, you finally meet Tina, and honestly, it was a bit of a letdown. It’s immediately obvious it’s not Ashly Burch voicing her, and it doesn’t even sound like a good impression. But it’s more than just the voice – Ashly is Tina to pretty much everyone who loves the Borderlands games. She just brings this amazing energy to the character, with the way she delivers lines, stretching out words or mumbling at just the right time to make you laugh. She’s been behind all of Tina’s most impactful moments, like when she said goodbye to Roland, and she was a huge reason why Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands worked so well. Hearing a different voice for Tina in Borderlands Mobile just feels…off, and that’s a real shame because the mobile game does a lot of other things really well.
With characters like Vaughn from Tales from the Borderlands and the ever-present Claptrap already sounding true to form, Tina’s unique personality really shines through.
Could the Main Borderlands Games Recast Tiny Tina Too?
It’s probably too soon to be concerned about Tina’s voice actor change affecting the main Borderlands games. Ashly Burch might have simply been unavailable to record lines for the mobile game, or the developers, Gearbox and Zynga, may have decided a well-known actor wasn’t necessary for a mobile-only title. However, it’s difficult not to be a little worried, considering Borderlands has recast popular characters in the past.
Borderlands 3 saw two important characters get new voice actors: Rhys and Claptrap. Troy Baker, who originally played Rhys, wanted to return, but couldn’t agree to the terms of the job offered by Gearbox. Ray Chase replaced him. For Claptrap, a pay disagreement led to Jim Foronda taking over from David Eddings, who also publicly accused Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford of assault – a claim Pitchford denied. Considering these two major recasts, and the absence of Tiny Tina in Borderlands 4, some believe the Borderlands Mobile game might be a way to see how fans react to potentially permanently changing voice actors for established characters.
I really hope the voice they used for Tina in Borderlands Mobile isn’t a sign of things to come. That Tina just doesn’t feel right compared to the one we all know and love! Whether it’s Borderlands 5 or a Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2, I’m really hoping Ashly Burch is back to voice her next time. If they use someone else, I think a lot of us would immediately notice and start asking for Ashly to return – it’s hard to imagine a new voice going unnoticed!
