The anime Boruto features many powerful characters who use different kinds of jutsu, or special techniques. The most dangerous of these are known as forbidden jutsu, which first appeared in the earlier Naruto series. Over time, and as ninja have become more skilled, these forbidden jutsu have become even more powerful in Boruto.
Few modern ninjas can master truly powerful, forbidden techniques, but a select few have exceptional control over them. These skilled individuals push their abilities to the limit by wielding some of the most dangerous jutsu ever created.
9. Multi Shadow Clone Jutsu
- User: Naruto Uzumaki
The Multi-Shadow Clone Jutsu is a dangerous, forbidden technique because it quickly drains a user’s chakra, potentially leading to death. However, Naruto Uzumaki, the Seventh Hokage, is able to use it safely. He has such a large reserve of chakra that creating thousands of shadow clones doesn’t harm him.
This powerful technique appeared early in the Naruto series and remains effective in Boruto. Both Naruto and, surprisingly, Sasuke have mastered it as adults. However, Boruto doesn’t have enough chakra to safely use this dangerous ability.
8. Rasenshuriken
- User: Naruto Uzumaki
I remember when Naruto first developed the Rasenshuriken – it was a really powerful Jutsu, and honestly, a bit scary to watch. He came up with it right before his fight with Kakuzu. Basically, he starts with the Rasengan, then adds Wind Release to it, making a Wind Release: Rasengan. But he didn’t stop there; he kept refining its shape until it became the fully-formed Rasenshuriken. It was amazing to see him create something so complex and dangerous.
This attack is extremely risky, inflicting damage to opponents at a cellular level, creating countless tiny tears in their tissues and organs – far too many to track even with a Sharingan. Initially, it also harmed Naruto’s own chakra pathways. However, Naruto later mastered the technique, eliminating its dangers. While the Rasenshuriken remains a forbidden jutsu, it no longer negatively impacts Naruto himself.
7. Byakugou
- User: Sakura Haruno, Tsunade Senju
The Byakugo is a powerful but often overlooked technique in the Boruto series. Created and mastered by Tsunade Senju, it has since been taught to Sakura. This technique requires years of dedicated training to constantly store chakra at a specific point in the body, typically the forehead.
This chakra ability can be released all at once through techniques like Creation Rebirth. This dramatically increases the user’s chakra levels and healing speed, allowing them to recover from even devastating injuries, like being split in two. For a short time, it’s almost as if they become immortal. As seen with Sakura against Ten-Tails Madara, the Byakugo’s power is incredibly potent. However, it’s a dangerous, Forbidden Technique because it forces the body to rapidly divide cells, pushing the user to the edge of death over time.
6. Reaper Death Seal
- User: Uzumaki Clan
The Reaper Death Seal is a highly dangerous and forbidden technique. It involves summoning a Shinigami to extract the soul of the target, but at the cost of the user’s life. While incredibly risky, it can be a powerful final option. It was first used by Minato Namikaze to seal part of the Nine-Tails within himself, and later by Hiruzen Sarutobi to immobilize Orochimaru by sealing his arms and limiting his abilities. Given the continued existence of the Uzumaki Clan in the Boruto era, the technique still exists. Although it’s unclear if anyone currently can perform the full sealing, characters like Orochimaru have demonstrated the ability to summon the Shinigami, suggesting they might be capable of using this powerful jutsu.
5. Eight Inner Gates Formation
- Users: Might Guy, Rock Lee
The Eight Inner Gates is an incredibly powerful fighting technique from the series. Mastered by Might Guy, it’s now used by Rock Lee in the Boruto storyline. This technique breaks down the body’s natural limits, letting a fighter reach their peak strength. However, it’s extremely dangerous – pushing it to the full extent, opening all eight gates, can be fatal. That’s why it’s considered a forbidden technique.
During the Fourth Great Ninja War, Might Guy unleashed the incredible power of the Eight Inner Gates, defeating Madara Uchiha but nearly sacrificing his life. Years later, Rock Lee has perfected this same dangerous technique, making him one of the most powerful ninjas in the Boruto series. However, using the Eight Gates remains a forbidden jutsu due to its extreme risk.
4. Izanami
- User: Uchiha Clan
Izanami is a powerful and risky technique unique to the Uchiha clan. Currently, in the Boruto series, only skilled users like Sasuke and potentially Shin Uchiha can perform it. Sarada is still too young and inexperienced to use such advanced jutsu, especially given the significant strain it puts on the user.
Izanami is a powerful technique that traps an opponent in a repeating loop. This loop continues until the target confronts their own identity. Itachi Uchiha first used Izanami during his fight with Kabuto Yakushi, successfully removing Kabuto from the battle and forcing him to self-reflect. Originally created to counter Izanagi, Izanami is considered a forbidden jutsu because it permanently dims the light in one of the user’s Sharingan.
3. Izanagi
- User: Uchiha Clan
Like Izanami, Izanagi is a powerful and forbidden technique. Izanagi lets the user make illusions real, essentially changing reality to their will – and that’s what makes it so dangerous.
Using this technique dims the power of one of the Sharingan, which is why it’s considered forbidden. However, it’s exceptionally dangerous and powerful – capable of even bringing someone back to life by altering reality itself.
2. Edo Tensei
- User: Kabuto Yakushi, Orochimaru
Perhaps the most dangerous forbidden technique in the series is the Edo Tensei. We saw its full power during the Fourth Great Ninja War, when Kabuto Yakushi used it to revive many deceased ninjas and pit them against the Allied Shinobi Forces.
This technique isn’t limited to Kabuto; Orochimaru, who is still alive, can also use it. He demonstrated it during the attack on Konoha and has likely improved it significantly since then. Orochimaru remains a powerful and dangerous individual, and despite his current inactivity, his skills are exceptionally formidable.
1. Rinne Tensei
- User: Rinnegan Holders
The Rinne Tensei is one of the most powerful and dangerous forbidden techniques in the Boruto series. It can only be used by those who possess the Rinnegan, like Sasuke Uchiha. As demonstrated in Naruto, this jutsu allows the user to revive anyone using the Rinnegan’s power. It’s the Rinnegan’s hidden Seventh Path, controlling life and death, and is incredibly formidable.
Nagato Uzumaki once used this powerful eye technique to instantly revive everyone who had perished in Konoha. Sasuke Uchiha is also capable of using it to bring people back from the dead, but doing so requires the user’s own life as a sacrifice. This is the reason the technique is considered forbidden.
