As a long-time fan who has followed both Naruto and Boruto since their inception, I can’t help but feel a sense of disappointment when it comes to the video game adaptations of the latter. While Naruto had a plethora of games that truly captured the spirit of the series, Boruto seems to be stuck in the shadow of its predecessor.
Naruto is a widely acclaimed shonen manga and anime series boasting a vast array of characters and creative, inventive powers. This franchise translates exceptionally well into video games, with numerous successful Naruto game titles, notably the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm collection. However, Naruto concluded its run eight years ago, giving way to its successor series, Boruto. Despite having been on air for eight years and producing two series – Boruto and Two Blue Vortex – there have been relatively few video game adaptations of the newer franchise.
The adaptations of the video game for Boruto are primarily linked to Naruto’s properties. However, as an individual series, Boruto boasts a rich cast of characters and a wide variety of abilities and transformations that make it capable of standing independently as a video game adaptation. In fact, smaller mobile game adaptations could be a suitable choice for the series and its characters, even without major console releases dedicated to a Boruto video game.
The State of Boruto Games Compared to Naruto
For fifteen years, the manga series Naruto was in publication. During this span, more than a dozen Naruto games were launched, with additional releases following the conclusion of both the manga and anime adaptations. Now, Boruto requires recognition for its unique merits and deserves video game adaptations independent of the Naruto characters or brand. With an entire manga series under its belt, including a time leap, it boasts a rich pool of characters and storylines akin to the Ninja Storm series.
Boruto boasts an extensive cast of characters, each possessing distinct transformations, power levels, and skills, making it ripe for a video game interpretation. This possible adaptation might mirror the manga’s narrative or function as a Player-versus-Player (PvP) fighting game instead. Moreover, Boruto hasn’t ventured into mobile gaming yet, which is not only a significant market in Japan but also suits simple fighting games, a genre where Boruto could truly shine.
It appears that the anime version of Boruto hasn’t covered the storyline called “Two Blue Vortex” yet, which might explain why it doesn’t have its own video game adaptation. However, creating a video game series that starts with the first part of this arc, leaving space to include or develop “Two Blue Vortex” as an expansion or sequel, could be a promising approach.
Boruto Needs Original Games
For eight years now, Boruto hasn’t had its own separate video game, despite having run for quite some time. Instead of developing unique adaptations, it relies on being integrated into Naruto games like the Ultimate Ninja Storm series with Naruto x Boruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections and Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker. Given the amount of content that a fighting shonen series like Boruto can generate over eight years, it’s surprising that it hasn’t produced a standalone game yet, especially considering its extensive cast and distinct power scaling system compared to Naruto.
One of the issues that arises with Boruto characters and content piggybacking on Naruto games is that it introduces the problem of balancing, as Boruto characters are far more powerful than even the strongest Naruto characters. This is especially problematic in the new part of the Boruto manga, Two Blue Vortex.
In order for Boruto to fully showcase the unique abilities and strengths of its characters, separate from those shown in Naruto games, it’s important for Boruto to stand on its own as a distinct series rather than constantly being compared to Naruto. Developing independent video games is one method that can help achieve this distinction.
