Boruto: Has the Rank of Kage Become Obsolete?

Boruto: Has the Rank of Kage Become Obsolete?

As a lifelong Narutophile who’s been following this saga since its inception, I can’t help but feel a twinge of melancholy when I think about how far the mighty Kage have fallen from their once-lofty perch. Back then, they were the paragons of shinobi power, capable of taking on entire armies and standing toe-to-toe with gods themselves. But now, in this brave new world of Boruto, they’ve been reduced to nothing more than ceremonial figureheads.

Key Takeaways

  • Boruto’s power scaling renders Kage irrelevant due to unprecedented abilities like Karma.
  • Current Kage pale in comparison to their predecessors, overshadowed by past feats.
  • With stronger contenders needed, Sarada could potentially redeem the status of Kage.

In contrast to how it built upon various aspects of the initial Naruto series, Boruto has remarkably escalated the franchise’s power limits to unimaginable levels. Although many characters from the series have faded in relevance, the latter part of Boruto appears to have redefined the position of Kage, making them seem more like ceremonial leaders rather than the all-powerful ninjas who could single-handedly defeat entire armies as they were once depicted.

The primary reason for this demotion (relegation) seems to be due to Boruto’s exceptional power growth in the Boruto series, which includes the emergence of new Otsutsuki members and the unveiling of Boruto and Kawaki’s Karma abilities. Notably, the Kage characters have largely been absent from the Boruto manga, making only occasional canonical appearances throughout the sequel.

Boruto’s Odd Power Scaling

New Antagonistic Threats Far Surpass the Kage’s Powers

A significant problem with the Boruto series lies in its excessive power growth among characters. Previously, even the main villains of Naruto‘s endgame had rendered many characters obsolete. Unfortunately, Boruto has further marginalized the remaining important figures. From the Karma Mark to the power of Omnipotence, the shinobi world is stretched beyond belief. With such immense powers at play, the Kage have become largely insignificant within the series’ current setting.

Given the latest happenings in the storyline of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, it’s evident that neither the Kage have a fighting chance against Boruto, Kawaki, or even Code. Armed with ninjutsu absorption and space-time abilities, these formidable figures appear almost godlike. To make matters worse, the current Five Kage have previously faced off against Momoshiki and Kinshiki, an Otsutsuki member who is currently the least powerful among the clan. Their struggle to control Kinshiki showcased their vulnerability against early Otsutsuki, which suggests they are no match for the newer contenders in the storyline.

Additionally, the unusual progression of Boruto’s power levels adds complexity to the situation for the Kage. It’s worth noting that Naruto and Sasuke, who are stronger than all other Kages combined, were overpowered by Jigen in a one-on-two encounter. Interestingly, Code, with twice the power of Jigen, was still defeated by Boruto even after his power limits were removed. This odd situation suggests that Boruto and Kawaki may be more powerful than any other Kage, which makes Boruto’s power development seem even more perplexing.

The Strength Of the Current Kage

The New Five Kage Fail to Compare to their Predecessors

In the world of Naruto, the Five Kages were undeniably formidable, boasting such immense power that they could single-handedly safeguard their entire nations. Compared to these powerful predecessors, the present Kages seem to pale in comparison. Except for Gaara, it appears that every other current Kage is a watered-down version of their former counterparts. This is particularly evident in the cases of Kurotsuchi, Darui, and Chojuro, who have yet to demonstrate their full potential within the series.

Due to the impressive achievements of the past Kage, the current leaders often find themselves struggling to live up to their predecessors’ legacies. Additionally, the storyline in Boruto presents a dismal outlook, as characters like Kurotsuchi are taken captive by deceptive means, Chojuro struggles against imposters posing as the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist, Gaara is defeated by Urashiki Otsutsuki, and even Naruto loses control over Kurama’s powers. As a result, the Five Kage have become largely irrelevant within the storyline.

In the Boruto: TBV manga, Shikamaru’s ascension to the temporary position of Eighth Hokage lessens the influence traditionally held by Kage. Despite being one of the most intelligent characters, Shikamaru doesn’t have much physical combat prowess. This is made more pronounced because his only known technique is Shadow Possession Jutsu.

Is There Any Hope For the Rank of Kage?

The Series Can Redeem the Rank of Kage With New Contenders

Boruto: Has the Rank of Kage Become Obsolete?

In the ongoing storyline of the Boruto: TBV manga, the roles of the Five Great Shinobi Leaders (Kage) have diminished significantly. It appears that the power structure established by the Otsutsuki and Karma users is not likely to change in the near future. Previously, all four other Kage had already taken a backseat in the story, but now even Naruto, the Seventh Hokage, has been placed on hold, leaving him absent from the narrative as well. With all five Kage no longer present, their once respected and profound positions seem to have lost much of their significance.

I plan on becoming Hokage by choosing a different path than my dad!

As a devoted fan, I believe Boruto: Naruto Next Generations has the power to shake up the current state of affairs by installing a more formidable Hokage in future generations. With Sarada emerging as a strong candidate for this position, there’s hope that the prestige of Kage might be restored. That being said, the Kages from other nations seem content with their present status, so it won’t be Sarada taking over from Shikamaru as Hokage any time soon. For now, it seems like the title of Kage will continue to hold little significance in Boruto’s storyline.
