This article contains spoilers from the Boruto series.
A major turning point in the Boruto series is the predicted end of the shinobi era, which has led fans to worry about what will happen to the ninja world. In Chapter 1 of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Kawaki bluntly stated this future, suggesting Boruto will have to accept a world without shinobi. This revelation happened while Konoha lay in ruins, as Boruto and Kawaki geared up to fight each other.
With each new chapter of the Boruto manga, we’re getting closer to understanding how the era of ninjas will come to an end. The secrets behind this ending are slowly being revealed through clues about Naruto’s current situation, Boruto’s unique abilities with his dojutsu, sword, and karma, and what drives Kawaki’s actions.
The End of the Age of Shinobi Is the Only Possible Outcome of Multiple Futures
Boruto Vs Kawaki Is Destined
The first episode of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations reveals that Boruto Uzumaki believes the era of ninjas is destined to end in destruction. He implies he’s tried repeatedly to alter the future, but every attempt leads to the same result: the downfall of his village, Konoha. Boruto can see possible futures thanks to powers he gained from Momoshiki, and he uses these visions to try and make different choices.
Kashin Koji can foresee Boruto’s future, understanding which choices will lead to life or death. This allows Boruto to glimpse various possible outcomes. However, despite any efforts to change things, all the futures Boruto sees ultimately end with the decline of the shinobi era.
The Age of Shinobi…shall end.—Kawaki
This suggests Boruto and Kawaki are fated to clash, even though Boruto desperately wants to help Kawaki overcome his inner darkness. Boruto believes the only way to reach Kawaki is through a decisive battle – a fight that will decide not just the world’s future, but also the lives of everyone Boruto cares about.
Naruto Uzumaki Isn’t Dead But Sealed
Naruto’s Return Will Only Happen After Boruto Defeats Kawaki
In the beginning of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Kawaki talks about Naruto Uzumaki, calling him the Seventh Hokage and saying he sent him away to a secret place. Many fans thought Naruto had died, but it’s later shown that Kawaki actually transported him and Hinata to a special dimension called Daikokuten, where time doesn’t move. Naruto is held within Kawaki’s own dimension, and most people believe he is deceased.
Hearing what Kawaki said, it’s pretty clear Naruto won’t be back anytime soon. Even if Jura attacks Konoha and tries to get to him, Kawaki won’t let Naruto out. It looks like Naruto will be stuck in the Daikokuten dimension for a while, and he might not return until after Boruto and Kawaki have their final battle.
I’ll send you where I sent the Seventh Hokage, Boruto.—Kawaki
In retrospect, Kawaki sealed Naruto away to protect him. He wants Naruto to live safely in a world full of threats like Code, the Shinju Clones, and other Otsutsuki clan members. Kawaki’s main priority is Naruto’s well-being, so it seems unlikely – at least for the time being – that he’ll ultimately harm him, despite what some fans might expect.
Konoha Is Destroyed
Possible Reasons Behind Konoha’s Destruction
When Kawaki told Boruto the age of ninjas was ending, Konoha was in ruins. The Hokage Rock, a symbol of the village, had been completely destroyed, creating a dramatic scene for Boruto and Kawaki’s final battle. The biggest questions surrounding this disaster are who attacked Konoha and what happened to all the other villagers. These are the mysteries that continue to puzzle fans when they think back to the beginning of the Boruto story.
It’s still unclear exactly what happened, but based on where the Boruto manga is going, here are a few possibilities. It could have been Jura using his full power against Konoha, or Code after becoming much stronger. Another possibility is Momoshiki completely taking over Boruto’s body – or even a different Otsutsuki clan member, like Shibai or Akebi, or a new, incredibly powerful one. Finally, it might have been Kawaki, who’s potentially lost patience with everything happening in Konoha.
