Summary
- Bosch: Legacy was canceled due to Amazon’s aim to attract a younger audience.
- The move to the Ballard spin-off could have been planned, but happened sooner.
- Concerns exist over the younger cast in Ballard affecting realism.
Fans of the series “Bosch: Legacy” are still processing the sudden ending that occurred last week following Amazon’s cancellation seven months ago. This has sparked a detective-like investigation to uncover why “Bosch: Legacy” was canceled in the first place. Although many were taken aback, Gregory Scott Cummins, who portrayed Crate Moore, wasn’t entirely shocked by Amazon’s decision to end the show.
In a chat with Game Rant, Cummins opined that the cancellation of Bosch: Legacy might be due to Amazon’s focus on attracting a younger audience. With a career spanning over 40 years in film and TV, Cummins’ insights are impressive. Although he laments the abrupt ending of Bosch: Legacy, he wholeheartedly endorses the upcoming Ballard spin-off.
Bosch: Legacy’s Cancelation Wasn’t A Complete Surprise To Cummins, As He’d Experienced First Hand How Amazon Wanted To Appeal To The Younger Demographic

It appears that Gregory Scott Cummins stated he was not overly surprised by the abrupt ending of “Bosch: Legacy”. He shared this sentiment in a recent interview with Game Rant.
It wasn’t unexpected that Amazon decided to cancel Bosch Legacy. The show seemed to be a blend of old and new characters, which suggested they were attempting to appeal to both established fans and attract newer viewers. However, it appears the average viewer for Bosch: Legacy is 50 years old or older. With enough subscribers in that age group and not many more from other demographics, Amazon had already secured their audience. Given Amazon’s recent focus on attracting a younger audience with the move to Ballard, it seems Bosch: Legacy wasn’t successful in drawing in younger viewers.
As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I’ve noticed that Cummins and Troy Evans, who brought Crate and Barrel to life in Bosch and Bosch: Legacy, found themselves in an unusual situation compared to other actors. You see, they had been integral characters for over 60 episodes of the original Bosch series. Yet, in the new Bosch: Legacy, these esteemed performers appeared only six times out of the total 30 episodes.

The Move To The Ballard Spin-Off Might Have Been On The Horizon But Amazon Decided To Do It Sooner Than Expected
Few high-end TV crime dramas endure for a decade, but Harry Bosch’s series is an exception to this rule. The initial ‘Bosch’ series debuted in 2014 and spanned seven seasons, while the subsequent spin-off premiered on Amazon Freevee in 2022, airing three seasons before its cancellation. Author Cummins shared with Game Rant:
Each installment of both “Bosch” and “Bosch: Legacy” was adapted from a pair of novels. There were seven seasons of “Bosch”, 14 books in total, but 16 books were authored. However, they were running low. Bosch was transitioning to private investigations. Then, the last five or six books were Renee Ballard series. Therefore, a change was imminent. Yet, they had the potential to write two more novels for “Bosch Legacy” Season 4. However, they decided to shift the storyline towards Renee Ballard earlier on.

The creative team had numerous suggestions for extending the Bosch universe and prolonging the series indefinitely. This was based on Michael Connelly’s books where Harry Bosch became a volunteer cold case investigator for the San Fernando police force, which was the intended direction for Bosch: Legacy season 4. However, as Cummins mentioned, it seems Amazon chose to hand over the torch to the Ballard spin-off sooner than anticipated, effectively ending Harry Bosch’s solo stories prematurely. It would have been fascinating to delve deeper into Crate and Barrel, but despite this setback, Cummins remains optimistic about the situation.
I’m equally enthusiastic about the Ballard series as I was for Bosch Legacy. Despite the reduction of Crate and Barrel scenes, I remain captivated by the characters who bring it to life. It seems that Amazon is aiming to attract a younger audience, which is simply the nature of the business world. I don’t take this change personally in the slightest; it’s just how things work out sometimes.
As a passionate cinephile, I must admit that when I heard about the upcoming Ballard spin-off, it sparked my interest. However, Cummins rightly highlighted one significant issue that needs to be tackled eventually: the story’s continuity and connection to the original Ballard series. It’s a challenge that lies ahead for the creators, but I’m excited to see how they handle it!
My main point is that the detectives’ portrayal following Bosch felt authentic and true-to-life. It’s likely that other younger individuals will assist Ballard with the cold cases in the future. Naturally, Bosch will be present at times. I don’t foresee him being completely absent from the storyline. His role is vital.
As a devoted admirer, I find this observation particularly insightful. The potential for the “Ballard” spin-off to unravel could hinge on this one aspect. In Connelly’s books, the cold case unit is populated by retired detectives who generously lend their expertise. It seems that the casting of Ballard leans towards a younger team, which may cater to a ‘younger demographic’.
However, Cummins, who strongly advocates for law enforcement, has garnered praise for his portrayal of Crate Moore from real-life detectives. If these detectives feel that “Ballard” doesn’t accurately represent them, they might withdraw their support, along with the rest of the fan base, many of whom are eager for more Harry Bosch, Crate Moore, Barrel Johnson, and other beloved characters.
