She seeks his assistance in uncovering the truth behind the disappearance of her daughter, son-in-law, and two grandchildren, who have inexplicably vanished without a hint of their whereabouts. Meanwhile, Maddie debates Bosch’s suspected war crimes with Honey Chandler, and the District Attorney candidate advises her to be more lenient on her father, hinting at the complexity of situations.

Robertson and Lopez meet up with Sergeant John Mankiewicz and question him about the incident involving Kurt Dockweiler in the interview room, but he claims he doesn’t know anything. However, the detective pair manage to get hold of a video showing Bosch attacking Dockweiler, which ends when Jerry Edgar steps in. Meanwhile, Bosch is focusing on the case of the missing family, when Chandler asks him to look into why the LAPD didn’t take Sheehan’s threat seriously. He agrees to do so after he investigates a lead on his current case. As it turns out, the missing person’s case isn’t being treated as suspicious, but Bosch discovers that the son-in-law’s construction business is in financial trouble and there may be instances of embezzlement. Later, Robertson and Lopez break into Bosch’s office and find a thank-you note from the Dignan family regarding a parole recommendation Bosch wrote for Curtis Dignan, who was serving time with Preston Borders in Wasco State Prison.
