Boss Battles in The First Berserker: Khazan Show Off the Title's Fighting Game Roots

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that The First Berserker: Khazan has caught my attention with its unique blend of Soulslike and fighting game elements. Having played my fair share of both genres, I can’t help but feel excited about this upcoming title.

As a devoted fan, I can’t contain my excitement for Nexon and Neople’s imminent action RPG, “The First Berserker: Khazan.” Unlike many games that simply add to the expanding Soulslike subgenre, this game is more than just another title. Initially unveiled under the working name “Project BBQ,” The First Berserker: Khazan now stands as Nexon and Neople’s latest masterpiece within their Dungeon & Fighter universe. This new release promises to further enrich the characters and lore of the widely acclaimed online beat ’em up franchise, keeping us fans on our toes!

In the game Khazan, there are many elements that pay tribute to FromSoftware’s past, but its roots in beat-’em-up and fighting games are particularly evident in its challenging boss battles.

At Gamescom 2024, there was an engaging hands-on demonstration of the upcoming game The First Berserker: Khazan. This session showcased a thrilling fight against one of the game’s many boss opponents, sparking curiosity about how other tough battles in the game would be handled. In a conversation with the developers, it was disclosed that being part of the DNF universe influenced the design team when creating the mechanics for boss confrontations. The aim is to ensure players might recognize some similarities with the games that served as inspiration for Khazan.

It’s clear that “The First Berserker: Khazan” is an action RPG, but what makes it unique is its connection to the “Dungeon & Fighter” universe and games like “DNF Duel”. The combat in “Khazan” resembles both Soulslike games and traditional fighting games. In order to succeed in the toughest battles, you need to carefully observe your enemy’s behavior and respond accordingly. This design philosophy for boss encounters, as emphasized by creative director Lee Jun-Ho, supports this idea.

In every fight against the game’s bosses, there will be instances of both victories and losses. We didn’t want players to feel discouraged after losing. To ensure a fair experience, we designed each boss with clear visibility of their attacks so that players can observe and learn attack patterns. This way, when players win, it’s not just by chance, and if they lose, they’ve gained valuable insights about the boss’s behavior for future attempts.
