Breaking Bad Creator Addresses the Fate of 6 Major Characters

Be warned: This article reveals significant spoilers for the shows Breaking Bad, the movie El Camino, and Better Call Saul. Even though Breaking Bad concluded in 2022, creator Vince Gilligan recently discussed what happened to six characters across all three stories during a TV appearance. He offered playful answers about some characters, like Saul Goodman and Huell Babineaux, but felt the ending for Walter White was pretty clear for viewers to understand.

First airing in 2008 on AMC, Breaking Bad is a dark and intense drama centered around Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher played by Bryan Cranston, who receives a terminal lung cancer diagnosis. To provide for his family after his death, White starts manufacturing methamphetamine, adopting the alias Heisenberg and entering a life of crime. He partners with Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), and together they navigate the dangerous world of drug trafficking, eventually attracting the attention of both the police and competing cartels. While the original series concluded in 2013, its story continued with El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie in 2019 and a prequel series, Better Call Saul, which ran from 2015 to 2022. Better Call Saul followed the story of Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk), the lawyer who represented White and Pinkman during the later seasons of Breaking Bad.

Breaking Bad Showrunner Ponders Where Some Characters Are Now

Even though the Breaking Bad universe concluded in 2022, fans are still curious about what happened to the show’s characters. On the November 20th episode of The Rich Eisen Show on Disney+, Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan talked about the futures of six popular characters. They began by discussing Kim Wexler (played by Rhea Seehorn) from Better Call Saul, who was initially a friend and then wife (and later ex-wife) of Saul Goodman. Gilligan believes Wexler probably went back to working as a public defender after visiting Goodman in prison.

Shortly after being mentioned by Eisen, Huell Babineaux, a memorable enforcer for Goodman who suffers from narcolepsy, had his fate revealed in the finale of Better Call Saul. Considered a fan favorite side character from Breaking Bad, Huell was ultimately released and able to return to his home in New Orleans when it was discovered he’d been wrongly arrested by the DEA. The final scene showed him waiting on a couch, and creator Vince Gilligan playfully noted that he’d eventually realize no one was there to guard him anymore.

In the last episodes of Better Call Saul, Saul Goodman – also known as Jimmy McGill and Gene Takavic – was arrested and sentenced to 86 years in prison in Colorado for multiple felonies. The show’s creator, Vince Gilligan, playfully suggested that Saul might receive a presidential pardon from Donald Trump and then spend his remaining years appearing in commercials.

Some Serious Fates Awaited Key Members of Breaking Bad’s Cast

Regarding what happened to the main characters after the series ended, Vince Gilligan revealed that Skyler and Walt Jr. managed to rebuild their lives. Walt Jr. might even write a book or start a podcast about his father’s secret life. As for Jesse Pinkman, played by Aaron Paul, he drove off in an El Camino, escaping his life as a meth cook to start fresh. The movie El Camino shows Jesse remembering his past as he tries to rebuild his life, eventually leading him to Alaska where Gilligan believes he found a degree of peace.

Vince Gilligan has definitively stated that Walter White died in the 2013 series finale of Breaking Bad, titled “Felina.” According to Gilligan, White was killed by a gunshot wound from an M60 machine gun during a shootout with Jack Welker, making his death clear for viewers. Although some characters on Breaking Bad could have survived, White’s death – whether from cancer or his own pride as Heisenberg – was always a likely outcome.
