As a seasoned gamer with over three decades under my belt, I’ve seen the evolution of RPGs from their humble beginnings to the colossal epics they are today. Yet, it’s rare to find a gem that harkens back to the simplicity and charm of those early days while still offering a fresh, modern twist. Breath of Death VII: The Beginning: Reanimated is one such treasure!
Clearly inspired by Capcom’s iconic Breath of Fire series, Breath of Death VII: The Beginning: Reanimated is an elegant remaster of a cherished indie turn-based RPG. This contemporary adaptation offers a delightful twist on a timeless series and its familiar themes, even featuring a logo that, at first glance, bears striking resemblance to Breath of Fire’s, and a chilling theme that aligns perfectly with Capcom’s style in the 1990s, during which they produced an array of masterpieces, such as Demon’s Crest from the expansive Daimakamura universe.
Breath of Death VII: The Beginning – Reanimated evokes the charm of bygone gaming eras, with its role-playing elements being more compact compared to their modern counterparts. You explore the game world on a map, gathering info from NPCs, seeking treasure, and engaging in combat that retains a classic feel while incorporating some delightful contemporary updates, keeping it invigorating and thrilling.
In this story, you’ll play as Dem, a lovable yet fearsome-looking skeleton who can’t speak but expresses his thoughts through dialogue boxes. The narrative is filled with laughter, as our bony hero faces some good-natured mockery while trying to gather allies and protect the JRPG-style world from an onslaught of undead enemies. Additionally, it pokes fun at 8-bit JRPGs in a self-aware way, always maintaining a lighthearted tone.
In the storyline, Dem’s portrayal is skillfully executed, allowing readers to foster a genuine emotional tie with him as the narrative unfolds, especially when he develops deeper connections with his teammates. Along your journey, you encounter a character named Sara who forges a potent bond with Dem due to her unique ability to sense his thoughts, even though his consciousness resides within a skull.
One unique aspect of this combat system compared to similar games is that enemies grow stronger as battles unfold, meaning if you don’t take advantage of your full attacking potential and crush foes swiftly, there’s a high chance you’ll receive a brutal beating since your adversaries are continuously strengthened. It’s crucial to leverage the combo system at your disposal for dealing greater damage.
Initially, Breath of Death VII was launched with a raw yet endearing 8-bit design, similar to an old Famicom cartridge. However, Shadow Layer Games have now significantly upgraded its appearance, making it appear as if it belongs to the 16-bit era. It wouldn’t seem out of place on a Super Nintendo or Sega Mega Drive. The visuals are stunning, and the soundtrack has been brilliantly reworked by HyperDuck SoundWorks.
This game isn’t overly lengthy originally, and it follows suit by being concise yet delightful. As hinted at in the beginning, you can finish it within roughly three hours. However, there are exciting new features to prolong its appeal, such as a fresh side quest for Dem and an incredibly challenging extra hard mode that’s quite a feat to conquer.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’d highly recommend giving Breath of Death VII: The Beginning: Reanimated a try, especially considering its remarkably affordable price. If you’ve dabbled in old-school JRPGs or simply appreciate a clever jab at the genre alongside some laugh-out-loud humor, this game is definitely worth your time and money!
