It’s surprising to think that the PS5 has been operational for six years now, given it was released towards the end of 2020 – a year remembered by many for various significant reasons. Sony has contributed to several successful titles such as “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2”, “Astro Bot”, and “God of War Ragnarok”. Although the aforementioned games are likely to have sequels, others might not.
It’s impossible to foretell whether a game will be successful after it has been released, as its success depends not only on critical acclaim but also on sales. For instance, a game might receive exceptional reviews but fail if no one buys it, and conversely, a game with poor reviews can still succeed if many people purchase it. The question remains whether the executives at these PS5-compatible first-party and third-party studios will approve the production of the following games for sequels on the PS5 or beyond based on their potential success.
8. The Callisto Protocol
Dead Space This Was Not
In 2022, it was anticipated that The Callisto Protocol would serve as the spiritual successor to Dead Space, given that EA owned the rights to the property. The development studio behind this game, Striking Distance Studios, consisted of former team members who had previously worked on the original project, raising expectations. However, it turned out that EA was also working on a remake of Dead Space, which overshadowed The Callisto Protocol and its team. The remake received positive reviews, while The Callisto Protocol did not. Upon release, the game faced bugs and a general lack of enthusiasm from both reviewers and fans. Despite post-launch support, it appears that this game ended on a cliffhanger without any indication of being continued.
7. Deathloop
No More Arkane To PlayStation
In 2021, the game titled “Deathloop” was launched as an exclusive for the PS5 consoles. However, later, due to rights acquisition by Xbox, it became available on multiple platforms. Featuring a perplexed protagonist named Colt and a relentless antagonist Julianna, this time-loop game is set in a roguelike shooter scenario. The game garnered positive reviews during its early days on the PS5, though it may not have been popular enough to warrant a sequel. Given that Arkane Studios is currently working on a project based on Blade, it remains uncertain when they might start work on a “Deathloop” sequel.
6. Evil West
Darkwatch All Over Again
Evil West” is like a spiritual successor to “Darkwatch”, both sharing similar atmospheres. “Darkwatch”, marking its 20th anniversary in 2025, was a late PS2-era game that followed a vampire in the Old West, fighting against other vampires and monsters.
In the same vein, “Evil West” was set in the classic Old West and incorporated steampunk-style weaponry and devices in its struggle against supernatural threats. The reception for this game was divided in 2022, with relatively low sales. Despite this, it managed to cultivate a dedicated fanbase, ensuring that it has supporters even if a sequel may not be forthcoming.
5. It Takes Two
Hazelight Will Continue
In 2021, the game “It Takes Two” received numerous awards upon its release. Developed by Hazelight Studios under EA, this game was both profitable and popular due to its cost-effective production. The team at Hazelight Studios specializes in creating unique gaming experiences, all connected through cooperative play. While a sequel to “It Takes Two” isn’t necessarily needed narratively, if they decided to incorporate a third player (perhaps the daughter) and call it “It Takes Three”, it could be an interesting concept. However, for now, they are focusing on developing another innovative platformer/action game titled “Split Fiction”.
4. Kena: Bridge Of Spirits
Pikmin + Zelda
Kena: Bridge of Spirits combined the exploration and platforming elements of Zelda games with the collecting of minions, similar to Pikmin. This was another 2021 exclusive game for the PS5, later also available on Xbox systems. Ember Lab, a smaller studio, demonstrated their ability to create high-quality AAA games with this project. Despite receiving positive reviews, it didn’t sell as much as expected globally. As this was their first major project, it remains unclear if Ember Lab will continue to produce standalone indie games or focus solely on sequels in the future.
3. Sackboy: A Big Adventure
Astro Boy Takes Over
As a devoted gamer, I’ve always been a fan of the adorable Sackboy, who became the iconic figurehead for the PS3 era of platform games, thanks to the captivating world of LittleBigPlanet. This legacy continued into the PS4 generation with the main trilogy’s third installment. However, the next game in the series took a slightly different turn. Rather than offering the traditional platforming experience coupled with level creation tools, Sackboy: A Big Adventure was more straightforwardly a platformer, but presented from a top-down perspective.
2020 saw an entertaining debut for PS5’s launch title, which remains enjoyable in multiplayer sessions. However, it’s uncertain if Sony will commission Sumo Digital or Media Molecule to develop a new mainline or spinoff LittleBigPlanet game due to the popularity of the Astro Bot series. Instead of Sackboy, it seems like Astro Bot has stolen the spotlight!
2. Stray
Leave The Cat Alone
In 2022, Stray offered players a heartwarming yet melancholic journey. As gamers, you assumed the role of a charming ginger cat who becomes separated from its feline family at the outset. Your adventure unfolded in a futuristic city, where you forged an alliance with a robot companion. Together, you navigated through challenges and ruins to reunite this lost family. The narrative concluded, making a sequel unnecessary. BlueTwelve Studio, the creators, might be better served by developing another original game based on the success of Stray, but that doesn’t imply it will or should receive a follow-up.
1. Star Wars Outlaws
A Division Within Ubisoft
2024 saw the arrival of Star Wars Outlaws, Ubisoft’s maiden venture into the Star Wars universe, following a string of games published by EA. The response was divided, with many critics pointing out technical glitches and stealth issues as significant drawbacks. To their credit, Ubisoft has been working diligently to fix these problems and enhance accessibility. However, it seems that the patches haven’t quite boosted sales as expected, possibly due to a rocky launch and post-launch phase for the game. The financial situation at Ubisoft suggests they might be in a tight spot financially, making it uncertain if they can afford to produce a sequel to this game anytime soon, aside from their already announced releases in 2025.
