Key Takeaways
- A new Evil Dead animated series is in the works, but progress is slow and it may be “years” before it’s ready.
- Bruce Campbell won’t reprise his role in the upcoming Evil Dead movies due to physical limitations.
- Despite delays, the new Evil Dead animated series is still moving forward, possibly launching around 2026.
As a seasoned gamer and ardent follower of the Evil Dead franchise for well over two decades now, I must say, the news about the upcoming animated series has left me both excited and impatient. The wait is indeed agonizingly long, but as Bruce Campbell himself said, it’s like watching molasses flow in slow motion.
Even though the initial “Evil Dead” film premiered 23 years ago this month, the franchise remains active and thriving. Interestingly, after some quiet periods, it has started to gain momentum once more. This revival involves an upcoming animated show among other things.
The upcoming animated show marks another addition to the ongoing Evil Dead saga. Recently, the film “Evil Dead Rise” hit theaters, but it didn’t feature Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams, who returned in the TV series “Ash vs Evil Dead,” which aired from 2015 to 2018. This series played a significant role in revitalizing the franchise’s popularity. It seems that both “Evil Dead Rise” and “Ash vs Evil Dead” have paved the way for this upcoming animated production. However, fans eagerly anticipating the release of the animated show received some disappointing news from Campbell just a few days ago.
Bruce Campbell Delivers Bad Evil Dead News
As I chatted with Comic Book about my latest venture – a series delving into the Satanic Panic saga, unrelated to the Evil Dead universe – our discussion inadvertently veered towards an animated project. I confided that things were progressing, albeit at a snail’s pace. I hinted that the final product might not see light for quite some time, as the development process is reminiscent of watching molasses flow.
During the discussion, Campbell casually brought up two additional movies in the Evil Dead series that are currently being made. As the franchise expands, it’s capitalizing on more advanced special effects than what was available when the first film premiered in 1981. The 2013 remake of the original received positive feedback from viewers and critics, but it wasn’t until two years later with Ash vs Evil Dead that there was a significant resurgence in popularity.
Campbell shared that his upcoming project will be an animated production, as he finds it challenging to perform physical acting following the conclusion of that television series.
In the interview, Campbell shared that since the end of the television series, his subsequent project would be an animated role due to his inability to continue with the intense physical acting demanded by portraying someone who fights Deadites on a regular basis. He cherishes the Ash Williams character and wishes to carry on playing it, but he needs some respite from being thrown about by fake evil. This is a major factor behind why “Evil Dead Rise” and the upcoming movies in the franchise won’t feature his character.
The current question revolves around when the animated “Evil Dead” series might debut on television and which network or streaming platform will carry it when it’s ready for release. It may seem as though the information about its release is being shared at a snail’s pace, but rest assured that it isn’t forgotten; there’s no intention to let it gather dust. In fact, while we’ve heard about it this summer, it looks like we might not see it until 2026 at the earliest.
