Bungie Announces Major Layoffs And Restructuring

As a dedicated fan who’s spent countless hours exploring the vibrant worlds of Destiny and marathon running (in my mind, at least), I can’t help but feel a pang of empathy for Bungie, the developer behind these cherished games. The news of their recent layoffs and restructuring is undeniably disheartening, particularly when considering the talent and passion that goes into crafting these immersive digital universes.

Bungie, the company that makes Destiny 2, has shared plans for significant job cuts and organizational changes aimed at reducing their overall staff count.

On their official site, Bungie announced that they’re reducing their staff by about 220 employees, which equates to around 17% of their workforce. In addition to these layoffs, 155 employees are being transferred to Sony, and another 75 are being relocated to a newly established studio.

Today poses a challenging and uncomfortable situation, particularly for our team members leaving Bungie. Each one of them has significantly and positively impacted our company. Our priority is to treat them with the utmost sensitivity and dignity. To help those affected by this workforce reduction, we will provide an attractive severance package, which includes compensation, bonus, and healthcare coverage.

According to Parsons, reducing the company staff from 1,300 to 850 employees is intended to “enhance Bungie’s focus, utilize Sony’s strengths, and foster fresh possibilities for Bungie’s team.”

Why Did Bungie Make The Layoffs?

According to Parsons, several aspects contributed to Bungie’s situation, which ultimately led them to carry out mass layoffs and reallocate their workforce.

For more than five years now, our aim has been to distribute games within three long-lasting, worldwide franchises. To achieve this goal, we initiated various incubation projects, each headed by senior developers from our existing teams. However, we soon discovered that this method was overextending our talent resources too rapidly. Additionally, it required our studio support systems to grow at a pace beyond what we could sustainably handle, considering our two main projects in development – Destiny and Marathon.

“In 2023, we faced a series of challenges that included a widespread economic recession, a significant decline in the games industry, a misstep with Destiny 2: Lightfall, and the necessity to dedicate more time to The Final Shape and Marathon to meet our players’ high expectations. We had set overly ambitious goals, exceeding our financial safety margins, and as a result, we started operating at a loss.”

According to Parsons, they were advised to alter both direction and pace due to the circumstances. Regrettably, every possible measure to prevent layoffs proved insufficient in this case.
