Bungie Being Sued For Copyright Infringement

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must admit that this news about the lawsuit against Bungie for alleged copyright infringement has piqued my interest. I’ve played Destiny 2 extensively and while I appreciate its immersive storyline, I can’t help but wonder if there was a secret tunnel connecting Bungie’s studio to Kelsey Martineau’s writing den!

A writer has filed a lawsuit against Bungie, alleging that they violated copyright by using the writer’s work as a basis for creating the storyline in Destiny 2.

According to reports by The Game Post on October 2nd, Kelsey Martineau (also known as author Caspar Cole) based in Louisiana, USA, has claimed that certain elements in Destiny 2’s Red War storyline appear to be derived from his work. He states that this material was published in 2013 and 2014, which predates the launch of Destiny 2 by three years.

Even though Destiny 2 provides a captivating and exhilarating gameplay that leaves players breathless, it’s important to note that its foundation is derived from Martineau’s original work.

As a gamer delving into both worlds, I’ve noticed striking parallels. Characters in both stories share remarkably similar traits – their attitudes, histories, and mindsets are strikingly consistent. For instance, the rise of Dominus Ghaul from Destiny 2 bears an uncanny resemblance to the ascension of Overlord Yinnerah in Martineau’s work. It’s fascinating how these two powerful figures have risen to power in such similar manners!

Two individuals are motivated, directed, and aided by exiled scholars to challenge their rulers and seize power, ultimately planning an invasion of Earth.

In simpler terms, the legal claim asserts that Bungie knowingly copied Martineau’s work. Consequently, Martineau wants a jury trial and is asking for compensation due to copyright violation and intentional misuse. The suit further asks Bungie to halt distribution of any content related to the work, and provides details on all sales of products or services that have infringed upon Martineau’s rights.

Right now, I haven’t heard anything from Bungie about the ongoing lawsuit. If you’re curious and want to dive deeper into the details, you can find the comprehensive 53-page document linked below.
