As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and anticipation when it comes to the latest update on Marathon. The game that introduced me to the world of first-person shooters back in the day is making a comeback, and I couldn’t be more excited!
Bungie has shared some information about the current situation of Marathon, which they presented in a roughly 10-minute video on their official YouTube platform.
In the video, Game Director Joe Ziegler provides a new overview of the progress made since the previous update regarding Marathon. He discusses the game’s development path and shares details about upcoming announcements related to the project.
This update does not feature any footage of the actual gameplay, instead, it offers some concept artwork for several game characters. If you’d like to view the video, you can find it right here.
In his discussion, Ziegler explains that the game belongs to the category of extraction shooters, and he clarifies this term for those who might not be familiar with it as a subgenre. Furthermore, he points out how he’s taken ideas from the original Marathon and adapted them to create an updated version suitable for today’s gaming audience.
He mentioned that they’re incorporating many recurring aspects, particularly the sense of mystery and the unsettling, almost spooky feel, as well as the overall psychological depth that the intellectual property already has, according to him.
However, we’re adding certain features to give it a contemporary feel and introduce it to a fresh narrative and universe. This allows us to continually evolve and surprise you throughout the journey.
As for the evolution of the game throughout its developmental stages, Ziegler notes that over the past few years, adjustments to the game have been quite dynamic, and numerous playtests have been conducted.
As a gamer myself, I’ve been fortunate to gather feedback from countless fellow gamers and creators alike. The enthusiasm and dedication they’ve shown towards our project is nothing short of incredible. It fills me with immense gratitude when I reflect on the sheer number of individuals who’ve taken their time to share their honest opinions – whether it’s a constructive critique like, “This part needs work,” or a heartening affirmation like, “This is fantastic!
He further mentioned that various aspects of the game are at varying stages of progress. For instance, the game’s environments are more fully developed, whereas the character models are still being refined. He also shared that the enemy models in Marathon are currently in a relatively early stage of development.
Regarding the characters, Ziegler unveiled a glimpse into some characters under construction: a character known as The Runner, also called Thief, and another named Stealth.
Later in the video, Ziegler concluded by mentioning that there are further content disclosures planned for Marathon in 2025. Additionally, in the same year, Bungie is planning to broaden their playtests for Marathon, inviting more players to participate, but no specific timeline was provided for this expansion.
As far as an official release date update, that information wasn’t provided.
