Bungie Hired Fans As they Would ‘Work for Less’, Former Exec Claims

As a long-time gamer and follower of the gaming industry, I can’t help but feel a mix of admiration and dismay upon learning about Bungie‘s hiring practices, as revealed by their former chief legal officer, Don McGowan. On one hand, it’s inspiring to see a company so passionate about their craft that they hire fans who are willing to work for less just because they love the game. However, on the other hand, it’s disheartening to know that this passion is being exploited in such a way.

Recently, it was disclosed by Don Mcgowan, formerly Bungie’s top legal officer, that the studio sometimes welcomed fans to work there, as they were amenable to accepting a lower salary.

In an interview on YouTube (through TheGamePost), McGowan, a former legal advisor at Bungie, shared insights about how game companies often recruit enthusiasts to pay them less due to their passion for the game. According to McGowan, this practice was prevalent at Bungie, where they capitalized on fans’ enthusiasm by hiring them since they were willing to work for lower wages.

Previously, McGowan has collaborated with firms such as Pokemon and Microsoft Games. In the interview, he discusses an instance where his colleagues inquired about a potential salary reduction upon his transition to Bungie. He stated that within the industry, it’s commonly assumed that studios are making staff accept lower pay, which is “a terrible stigma.” However, McGowan asserted, “When you exclusively hire enthusiasts, you can manage that perception.
