Bungie and writer Matthew Martineau have reached a settlement in their year-long legal dispute. The lawsuit centered on claims that Martineau’s work may have been copied in the video game Destiny 2.
As a long-time Destiny 2 player, I remember how excited everyone was when it launched back in 2017. Even though it’s free-to-play now with all the expansions, there’s been some drama behind the scenes. Last year, a writer named Matthew Martineau actually sued Bungie, saying they’d used ideas from his work in the Red Legion storyline and The Curse of Osiris expansion. It was a pretty big deal, and the case actually made it past Bungie’s attempts to get it thrown out and was heading to court. Thankfully, it looks like everything’s been settled out of court now, which is good to hear.
Bungie and Matthew Martineau Settle Destiny 2 Copyright Lawsuit

Bungie and Matthew Martineau have reached a settlement in their lawsuit, according to documents obtained by The Game Post. The case has been closed and will not proceed to trial. Court filings state that…
The court has been informed that all parties have reached a settlement. Therefore, the case is dismissed for everyone involved, with no one responsible for court fees. However, either party can ask to reopen the case within 60 days if the settlement falls through. The court will also maintain the authority to enforce the terms of the settlement if it isn’t finalized within that same 60-day period.
Okay, so here’s the deal: thankfully, they’ve reached a compromise and won’t be going to court! It sounds like they’re trying to avoid a trial, which is good news. From what I understand, when cases do settle, it usually means both sides had some responsibility, but thankfully, we won’t have to worry about a trial if everything goes through in the next 60 days.
Although Matthew Martineau’s accusations might be exaggerated, Bungie has faced copyright issues before. During the early stages of the game Marathon, they were found to have used artwork from artist ANTIREAL without permission. This caused a delay in the game’s release, and it still hasn’t come out.
