Bungie has officially unveiled their upcoming first-person shooter game, which goes by the name Marathon. Prior to becoming renowned for the Halo series, Bungie initially made a name for itself in the first-person shooter genre with games such as Pathways Into Darkness and the Marathon triology. After dedicating over a decade to developing and releasing Destiny and its sequel, Bungie is now returning to its origins by reviving the Marathon franchise.

For quite some time, fans have been anticipating Bungie’s upcoming game based on the Marathon series. However, specifics about this project have been sparse. With Bungie concluding the main story of Destiny 2 with the Final Shape expansion last year, many assumed that Marathon would finally take center stage. And now, the wait is over, as Bungie has shared comprehensive details about Marathon, shedding light on its nature and its release date.

According to Bungie, the game titled “Marathon” will be released on September 23. At its heart, this game is an extraction shooter where players can choose from six characters, known as “runners.” These runners serve as the playable characters in the game. Groups of three players will navigate through maps filled with dangerous NPCs and other gamers. The number of players per map varies, but the Dire Marsh map, showcased during the “Marathon” gameplay reveal, supports up to 18 players in a single match. The aim is to gather loot and make it out of the map alive.

Marathon Release Date

In contrast to numerous contemporary shooter games, Marathon showcases a vibrant, eye-catching art style. The game allows players to employ an assortment of weapons and special skills to vanquish their adversaries, with certain attacks bearing resemblance to those found in some of the studio’s other productions, such as Destiny. From what we’ve seen thus far, it appears that fans of Bungie’s distinctive style of meticulously crafted firefights have a great deal to anticipate when Marathon is released.

As a gaming enthusiast, I must admit that there are some who express skepticism about the upcoming title, Marathon. The comments on the announcement trailer have stirred up discussions, with some even drawing comparisons to Sony’s live-service game, Concord, which didn’t fare too well. However, it’s still too early in the game to pass a verdict. Fortunately, fans won’t have to wait until September 23 to experience it firsthand. A closed alpha of the game is scheduled for April 23, and those fortunate enough to receive an invite can dive right in!
