As a die-hard Zombies fan who’s been through the trenches since the early days of Nacht der Untoten, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension when it comes to Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s return of the infamous Jet Gun. Don’t get me wrong, the idea of blasting zombies into smithereens with a rocket launcher disguised as a gun is enticing, but the explosive limitations and the need for constant reassembly have left a bitter taste in my gaming memories.

In contrast to the main emphasis in promotional campaigns for the recent iterations of “Call of Duty” games on multiplayer features, it’s the Zombies mode that is stealing the limelight in “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6”. A tantalizing hint was dropped at the end of the June Direct, and now, the full details of the Zombies mode for “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6” have been unveiled, with a series of official trailers showcasing the opening cinematic and offering a glimpse into numerous new gameplay elements.

In the Philippine Sea, there floats an island prison reminiscent of classic Call of Duty Zombies gameplay, named Terminus. This map seems to mark a return to form for the series, drawing inspiration from legendary maps such as Mob of the Dead and Shi No Numa, while still offering something fresh and captivating. However, during the latest reveal of Zombies in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Terminus was the main focus. But at launch, it will be one of two playable maps, with Treyarch hinting that a contentious Wonder Weapon could resurface in the second map.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s Jet Gun Needs Some Major Improvements

Call of Duty’s Jet Gun Has Always Been Bottom of the Barrel

Over the past 16 years, Call of Duty: Zombies has been generously stocked with Wonder Weapons, and despite each player having their preferred choice, there are a few that stand out as being significantly less effective than the others. The Jet Gun is one such example of a Wonder Weapon that often falls short. This weapon made its debut in the contentious TranZit map of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, and since then, it’s been notoriously known as one of the poorest performing Wonder Weapons in the annals of Call of Duty: Zombies.

In contrast to many Wonder Weapons that are either hidden in Mystery Boxes or obtained by solving map puzzles, the Jet Gun from Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 needs to be constructed, and its components are dispersed across the expansive map. This fact alone makes the Jet Gun a bit of a nuisance, but what truly relegates it to the bottom rung is that it detonates after prolonged use. When the dial on the left side of the weapon reaches red, the Jet Gun explodes in the player’s hands, causing minor damage and scattering the weapon’s parts everywhere. The player must then gather all these scattered pieces and manually reassemble the weapon at a workbench to use it again.

Call of Duty Has Tried to Revive Bad Wonder Weapons Before

To clarify what was hinted earlier, the upcoming title Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is reintroducing the Jet Gun as a legendary weapon in its Liberty Falls map. It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time Call of Duty has attempted to resurrect a less-than-stellar Wonder Weapon. The Winter’s Howl, which was initially considered one of the worst weapons in the series when it debuted in 2010 as part of Call of Duty: Black Ops, made a return in 2018 with the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and its remastered “Classified” map. The revamped Winter’s Howl boasted several enhancements, including larger ammo capacity, stronger shots that slowed enemies more effectively, and less damage drop-off in later rounds. Despite these improvements, the Winter’s Howl from Black Ops 4 still doesn’t make the cut on most top Wonder Weapon rankings.

How Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Can Improve the Jet Gun

While the Jet Gun is often criticized as one of the least effective Wonder Weapons in Call of Duty history, its primary function isn’t actually problematic. In fact, it’s quite enjoyable to vacuum up swarms of Zombies and transform them into gooey messes. However, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 could significantly improve the Jet Gun by eliminating some of the frustrating aspects introduced in Black Ops 2, such as its tendency to accidentally explode in the player’s hands and the need for constant rebuilding following each detonation.
