As a long-time Call of Duty fan and someone who’s spent countless hours honing my gaming skills, I can’t help but feel disheartened by this latest development. The news that yet another Battle Pass might be on the horizon for the upcoming Squid Game collaboration has left me feeling like I’ve been hit with a red ink splatter gun.
A secret communication has disclosed that the forthcoming collaboration between Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Warzone with Squid Game might introduce a separate premium Battle Pass, causing some discontent among fans. It appears that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, which already offers several Battle Pass options such as the free version, a paid pass, and the Blackcell edition offering additional cosmetic rewards and items, could soon introduce another paid pass with the Squid Game event.
Following some playful jibes earlier in December, Activision officially set the launch date for the Call of Duty crossover with Squid Game on Christmas Day (25th). Excited players are currently counting down the days until January 3rd when they can dive into an array of Squid Game-styled game modes, choose from a range of new operator skins and weapon designs, among other things. Contrary to popular belief, it seems that fans might need to purchase another Battle Pass if they wish to fully capitalize on the upcoming event, as suggested by recent leaks.
Call of Duty Players Angered Over New Squid Game Event Pass
Players of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 express their disappointment and potential discontinuation of the game following a revelation by Twitter user xFleXy_ about the upcoming Squid Game collaboration featuring another paid Battle Pass. Although not yet confirmed in-game, a leaked message of the day suggests an “engaging Event Pass” for the Call of Duty Squid Game event, with a “Premium Track option” that grants players access to additional rewards, such as the Front Man operator.
On Reddit, many users are expressing their displeasure with Activision’s move to incorporate another paid Battle Pass into both Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Warzone. User Against-The-Current stated they have had enough of Call of Duty, finding the inclusion of additional microtransactions unacceptable. Meanwhile, 1tankyt noted the irony that Activision is monetizing an event which is essentially an advertisement itself. Some users highlighted that Fortnite often employs a similar monetization strategy, but it’s significant to mention that Fortnite is free-to-play, whereas users have to pay around $70 annually for Call of Duty.
Although Activision doesn’t compel players to buy the upcoming event pass, fans are disgruntled due to the studio seeming to prioritize new microtransactions. This is problematic as ranked modes in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Warzone continue to host cheaters. Treyarch is working on enhancing the game’s anti-cheat measures, but some feel that further monetization is an insult to players who have already spent $70 on a game that still has numerous problems.
