As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can confidently say that the Nuketown map in the Call of Duty: Black Ops series has been a staple in my gaming life for more than a decade now. From the original version in 2010 to the latest iteration in Black Ops Cold War, each one has brought its unique charm and gameplay style that I’ve enjoyed immensely.
From its beginnings, the Call of Duty: Black Ops series has consistently included certain elements that fans have come to anticipate. Typically, there’s an action-packed, enigmatic campaign brimming with surprises, a thrilling zombies mode set in rounds, and the beloved Nuketown map will receive a fresh update. In line with tradition, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 features these aspects once more. However, it’s worth considering that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 could innovate by introducing something entirely novel with the Nuketown concept.
Due to Nuketown being a staple map across all Black Ops games, numerous variations of this classic have emerged. Interestingly, each version typically appears only within the game where it debuts before being swapped for another in the sequel. However, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is breaking tradition by revisiting the original Nuketown on November 1. Given that Treyarch is delving into the subseries’ history, it seems fitting that other iterations of Nuketown might resurface and get their moment in the limelight again.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Could Be a True Celebration of the Subseries
Black Ops Has Many Nuketowns Waiting to Be Reintroduced
In 2010, when Call of Duty: Black Ops was launched, Nuketown, the initial version of the map, was introduced. This compact map, featuring just two double-story houses, backyards, and a street dotted with a few cars, instantly became popular among fans due to its setup that fostered intense, swift multiplayer gameplay. Rather than replacing it, Treyarch decided to cement Nuketown as a recurring feature in the Black Ops series.
In Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, they introduced a refreshed version of the classic map, Nuketown 2025, with a 1960s design while keeping most other elements intact. The studio also included this map in their Zombie mode. Later, when Black Ops 3 was released, the map was revamped as Nuk3town, incorporating its new movement system and a futuristic 2065 look. When Black Ops 4 came out, players got a Russian version of the map along with the return of the Zombies map. Lastly, in Black Ops Cold War, they created Nuketown ’84, an abandoned remake of its earlier versions.
Black Ops 6 Could Be the Place to Do Just That
There are five or seven variations of Nuketown, depending on whether players include the two from Zombies mode. With Black Ops 6, the original version from 2010 is set to make a comeback. Whether it will have the same impact as it did 14 years ago remains to be seen, but the fanbase appears eager to play it. If it becomes popular again, Treyarch may feel compelled to develop more of them.
Black Ops 6 might serve as a platform for all incarnations of Nuketown, given the opportunity. Each version may share some similarities, but they also had unique characteristics that made them stand out. For instance, their visual styles varied, and each was tailored to suit the movement mechanics of its respective game. Players have been arguing over which one is superior for quite a while now. Consequently, it would be unfortunate if any of the other versions didn’t get another chance to shine, even for a temporary special event.
If Treyarch fails to incorporate more Nuketowns into multiplayer, they should at least re-introduce the Zombie version within the game. Despite not being as sophisticated as some other Zombies maps, Nuketown Zombies had a unique charm. Playing this classic map from a fresh perspective was enjoyable, and its compact design offered a distinctly different Zombies gaming experience. Given that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has delivered some exceptional Zombies content, it seems fitting to include one of the most entertaining maps in the package as well.
