As a gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that I’ve seen my fair share of in-game purchases and seasonal passes. However, the recent announcement regarding BlackCell XP boosts for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has left me scratching my head.
The continued triumph of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has been further amplified with the debut of Season One Reloaded on December 5, delivering a fresh wave of content for both Zombies and multiplayer gameplay to enthusiastic fans. This update introduces a new Zombies map called Citadelle des Morts, while introducing fresh maps, temporary play modes, and gear to standard multiplayer.
Despite the apparent joy surrounding Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, given its recent record-breaking month of player engagement, certain announcements from Treyarch have cast a shadow over the excitement. For instance, they unveiled a new reward system for BlackCell battle pass purchases across all future seasons of Black Ops 6. This system offers eligible players a permanent XP multiplier that can be accumulated with each BlackCell purchase. On the surface, this doesn’t appear too problematic. However, it exacerbates the concern about “pay-to-win” dynamics between regular Call of Duty gameplay and the expanding selection of in-game purchases available to players, making the game less fair for those who don’t spend extra money.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s BlackCell XP Boosts Have Caused Quite a Stir
For quite a while now, much like many widely played multiplayer games, the Call of Duty series has been utilizing a seasonal pass system to expand the content of each game following its release. Activision pushed this method of content distribution one step further in 2022, by introducing a top-tier BlackCell battle pass to the franchise starting with season three of Modern Warfare 2. This BlackCell pass offers more content than the regular premium battle pass and comes at a higher cost. Since its introduction, it has become a common feature in the seasons of Call of Duty games.
BlackCell tries to attract players with unique, seasonal BlackCell character skins that are exclusive to this platform, along with impressive weapon designs and additional CoD Points, among other perks. Although the largely cosmetic advantages of owning BlackCell have made it seem like a less noticed luxury in-game purchase since its debut, the worth of future BlackCell purchases is set for a significant change, sparking some debate.
From Season 2 onwards in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, purchasing the BlackCell pass for any season will permanently increase your XP gain by 10%. Each subsequent seasonal purchase adds to this boost, so if you continue buying the BlackCell pass throughout the seasons, you could accumulate a permanent 50% XP boost by Season 6 of Black Ops 6.
In addition to the BlackCell-related controversies surrounding Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, it’s worth noting that the Replacer Bundle caused an issue as well. This bundle offered an additional skin for those who owned the Blackcell battle pass, leading some players to unintentionally miss out on parts of store bundles if they didn’t have the pricier version of the Call of Duty battle pass.
The BlackCell Changes Are the Latest in a Long Line of XP-Related Controversies For Black Ops 6
This new feature in Black Ops 6 significantly revolutionizes the Prestige Master grind for the BlackCell faction, providing them with a clear upper hand against players who only have access to the base game. As more seasons roll out, this advantage is expected to grow even larger. Notably, these forthcoming BlackCell perks also enhance Weapon XP, ensuring that BlackCell players can level up newly introduced weapons faster and unlock their most potent attachments before others do.
The game Black Ops 6 has been embroiled in a number of debates surrounding experience points (XP) due to the temporary disappearance of legacy XP tokens and faulty XP multipliers during Double XP events, making the recent announcement of permanent XP boosts tied to in-game purchases particularly ill-timed. Although it is difficult to definitively label these permanent XP boosts as pay-to-win, they do create an opportunity for BlackCell passes to potentially provide benefits beyond just cosmetics in the future.
