Call of Duty: Black Ops 6's Campaign Could Inspire a New Zombies Experience

As a seasoned gamer who’s been through the zombie apocalypse more times than I can count, I must say that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has truly brought back the glory days of Zombies for me. The campaign missions, while not traditionally structured, have given us a glimpse into what could be an entirely new type of CoD Zombies experience.

This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s campaign.

Over the past couple of years, I’ve felt that Call of Duty Zombies hasn’t quite hit its stride. While Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s Outbreak mode sparked some intriguing concepts, Modern Warfare 3’s open-world Zombies mode seemed to miss the mark by drawing the wrong lessons from it and offering a rather bland, lifeless mode that fell short in comparison to its predecessors. However, I’m thrilled to say that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has delivered on our hopes for a return to form!

The Zombies mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is exceptional compared to recent releases, introducing two maps that harken back to the series’ prime. However, the Zombies content in Black Ops 6 doesn’t end with its standalone mode. In a surprising twist, the campaign of Black Ops 6 incorporates some missions with a zombie theme, although they are basic, they might set the stage for a new kind of Call of Duty Zombies experience.

How Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s Campaign Lays the Groundwork for a New Type of CoD Zombies Experience

Black Ops 6’s ‘Emergence’ Is a Glorified Zombies Boss Gauntlet

Approximately halfway through the campaign of “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6,” players embark on a mission called ‘Emergence.’ This mission finds the player character, Case, navigating an abandoned CIA research facility that once housed bioweapon experiments. The mission commences with Case accidentally inhaling some of these biological weapons, leading him to hallucinate encounters with familiar adversaries.

As I tread through the labyrinthine corridors of this research facility, a horde of reanimated scientists, zombie researchers, and facility staffers hot on my heels, I realize I’m not just playing a game anymore – they’re chasing me! My objective becomes crystal clear: fight off this undead horde and grab three keycards that once belonged to the directors.

The mission titled ‘Emergence’ in ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’ has rapidly gained popularity due to its intricate plotline and unique style that sets it apart from typical ‘Call of Duty’ levels. It’s exciting to witness the zombie element, usually associated with ‘Call of Duty’, being integrated into a narrative-heavy environment. The thought of the Zombies mode expanding its scope and offering a complete storyline, similar in structure and objectives to ‘Emergence’, could potentially add an intriguing layer to the gameplay experience.

Black Ops 6’s ‘Separation Anxiety’ Shows How a Zombies Set Piece Could Work

Instead of a continuous loop of objective completion and boss fights in a story-driven mode for Call of Duty Zombies lasting long, it’s crucial to introduce engaging set pieces to keep players captivated. Fortunately, the campaign of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 offers potential for such a full story mode.

In the second to last mission of Black Ops 6‘s storyline, named ‘Separation Anxiety,’ players assume command over Jane Harrow, a former CIA handler who has turned into a villain, experiencing mental fragmentation due to Frank Woods’ interrogation. This challenging mission, titled ‘Separation Anxiety,’ involves Harrow battling eerie, zombie-esque iterations of herself.

At the climax of ‘Separation Anxiety’, players dash through a towering building, firing at zombified Harrows. Upon reaching a helicopter, they assume control over its mounted gun, raining down bullets on hordes of enemy zombies jumping from nearby skyscrapers. This intense scene is reminiscent of classic Call of Duty Zombies missions.
