Call of Duty: Black Ops 6's 'Separation Anxiety' Makes it a Halloween Game

As a seasoned Call of Duty veteran who has braved countless battles and missions since the early days, I must say that ‘Separation Anxiety’ from Black Ops 6 is a Halloween treat not to be missed. This mission takes the franchise into uncharted territory with its psychological horror elements, and it does so masterfully.

In Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, the campaign offers a variety of distinct mission styles, including fast-paced car chases, helicopter shootouts, and traditional infantry combat missions, which are longtime series favorites. While Black Ops 6 pays homage to the classic Call of Duty campaigns, it also ventures into uncharted territory with innovative mission types that deviate from the franchise’s usual tone.

In the 6-8 hour campaign of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, players will encounter several nail-biting horror sequences. One mission stands out for its focus on psychological horror, making it an ideal spooky treat to experience during Halloween.

Why Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s ‘Separation Anxiety‘ Is a Must-Play This Halloween

‘Separation Anxiety’ Has Some Surprisingly Scary Moments

In the second-to-last mission of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6‘s storyline titled ‘Separation Anxiety’, Frank Woods and his renegade black ops squad interrogate a former CIA operative named Jane Harrow, aiming to uncover the location where The Pantheon initially launched their bioweapon attack. To achieve this goal, they administer a mind-altering substance to Harrow, causing her personality to splinter into two distinct entities.

As I navigate the game, I guide Harrow on her journey through the depths of her subconscious, constantly confronting her inner darkness. My task is to gather three fragments of a shattered mirror, each one helping Harrow regain lost memories and share them with Woods and his crew for further understanding.

This starting point sets up some rather unusual and dreamlike images, and it doesn’t take long before things get eerie. Following a challenging quest of mental gymnastics, Harrow attempts to gather the second fragment of mirror but ends up tumbling into an entirely dark cellar instead. The task given to players is to activate various generators scattered throughout the pitch-black chamber, initially only equipped with a reliable lantern as their guiding light.

As soon as the initial generator is turned on, players will start to hear eerie, zombie-esque sounds echoing everywhere. All of a sudden, the player finds themselves surrounded by a horde of ghostly figures resembling Harrow, lumbering towards them, moving like characters from Black Ops 6’s Zombies mode. Even though this sequence is brief, its quick escalation, ominous setting, tense ambiance, and impactful conclusion make it a standout moment, making it worth experiencing during the haunting season.

‘Separation Anxiety’ Ends In a Spectacular Zombie-Slaying Set Piece

Following the initial horde of Harrow-zombies, ‘Separation Anxiety’ ratchets up the tension substantially. As Harrow’s malicious alter ego seeks to reclaim her mental stronghold, a horde of similar undead adversaries are unleashed upon the player, and unlike in the basement, they now have the resources to fend them off. This is followed by an emotionally satisfying sequence of zombie annihilation, where players can obliterate hordes of enemies using a potent shotgun, an LMG, and dual pistols.

This series reaches an exhilarating climax with a grandiose scene where the character hangs off a helicopter, firing at hordes of Harrow-zombies on towering buildings. Although this action may seem reminiscent to seasoned Call of Duty players, its terrifying element sets it apart from previous installments.
