Call of Duty Gets Gigantic New Update

Key Takeaways

  • Call of Duty introduces an update improving its UI and preparing for the Black Ops 6 launch.
  • The update’s file size varies by platform.
  • Activision promises future updates will have smaller file sizes following the launch of Black Ops 6.

As a seasoned gamer who has been through countless Call of Duty titles since its inception, I can confidently say that the latest update for Call of Duty is a mixed bag. On one hand, it prepares us for the much-anticipated Black Ops 6 launch and introduces a long-awaited UI overhaul. However, the varying file sizes across different platforms have left me scratching my head.

Players of “Call of Duty” can now download a substantial update which primes “Black Ops 6” for installation and enhances the problematic User Interface of Call of Duty HQ. “Black Ops 6” represents the upcoming installment in Activision’s popular first-person shooter series. It features the comeback of round-based Zombies, a single-player campaign set in the ’90s, and 16 original multiplayer maps. The highly anticipated “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6” is one of the most significant releases this Fall, with fans excited to explore its innovative omnimovement system that allows players to sprint, slide, and dive in any direction.

Previously in August, Activision outlined a plan for updates aimed at reducing the excessive file sizes and improving the much-criticized user interface of Call of Duty. This process started with the Season 5 Reloaded update, subtly setting up the restructuring of game files. The open beta for Black Ops 6 was launched on August 30, and the UI update is scheduled for mid-October. The roadmap encompasses the release of Black Ops 6 on October 25 and Season 1, which is anticipated to commence in early December.

As a devoted CoD fan, I’m thrilled to share that Call of Duty has finally delivered on its promised UI overhaul! Although this update doesn’t bring any tweaks to Modern Warfare 3 or Warzone gameplay, it certainly isn’t all fluff. This update lays the groundwork for Black Ops 6’s upcoming debut and introduces a fresh new UI design. Interestingly, the update gobbles up 52 GB of space on PlayStation 5, while it mysteriously takes 112 GB on Xbox Series X and S. It seems there might be a bug affecting Xbox users, as reports suggest that the actual size of the update is smaller on Xbox.

New Call of Duty Update Prepares for Black Ops 6 Launch With New UI

Although some may find a 52GB update excessively large, fans can anticipate these sizes to shrink in time. Initially, when Activision outlined their plan in August, they warned that certain preparatory updates would be big, but these will eventually lead to smaller update sizes for Call of Duty. In essence, this pre-Black Ops 6 update could mark one of the final updates causing unnecessary worry among Call of Duty players. Fingers crossed that the revamped COD HQ UI meets fan expectations, as it has been a recurring source of frustration since its introduction with Modern Warfare 2 two years ago.

The upcoming game, “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6,” is set to be released on October 25. Unlike in previous years, this time there won’t be early access to the campaign like with “Modern Warfare 2” and last year’s “Modern Warfare 3.” However, it’s worth noting that for Xbox gamers, “Black Ops 6” will be available on Game Pass on its release day, making it the first “Call of Duty” game to do so. This is due to Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
