Call of Duty: Warzone Makes Major Change to Smoke, But Fans Aren't Happy

Key Takeaways

  • Call of Duty: Warzone reduced DTIR muzzle smoke for better visibility, but distance still affects visibility.
  • Despite player frustration, Blackcell skin reduces smoke, making it less invasive for players.
  • Fans hope the Call of Duty developers continue to address player feedback for Warzone like they are for Black Ops 6.

As a dedicated fan who’s seen more than a few sunsets in the battlefields of Call of Duty: Warzone, I can’t help but feel a mix of relief and frustration with the latest October update. The reduced muzzle smoke at close range is a breath of fresh (albeit digital) air, making those tense encounters a tad less smoky. However, as I stretch my virtual eyes to see beyond the next hill, I find myself once again squinting through the haze. It seems distance still plays a trickster’s game with visibility in Warzone.

In the October update for Call of Duty: Warzone, the bothersome muzzle smoke issue has been addressed and visibility has noticeably improved at close quarters. However, the clarity isn’t consistent when looking from varying distances away from the target. Interestingly enough, this adjustment wasn’t explicitly mentioned in the patch notes.

Moving forward to “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6”, the Season 6 updates for “Call of Duty: Warzone” and “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3” didn’t offer as much content as anticipated. Despite introducing new weapons and temporary game modes, players were hoping for more in the final season. A change that sparked controversy among the community was the introduction of muzzle smoke in “Call of Duty: Warzone” Season 6 update, making it challenging for players to spot their opponents due to excessive smoke. Fortunately, the developers have made some adjustments to the muzzle smoke in the game, but there’s a caveat…

In a recent post on the Warzone subreddit, user pnokmn points out an unmentioned alteration in the latest Call of Duty: Warzone October update. They note that the reduction of DTIR’s muzzle smoke wasn’t as straightforward as one might expect. While the smoke is now less intrusive and vision improves significantly when aiming at short distances, as players move further away, the smoke once again becomes quite prominent in their field of view.

Call of Duty: Warzone Fans Call Out Pay-To-Win Blackcell Blueprint

Although the smoke produced by the gun can be bothersome, players have also voiced their displeasure about the Blackcell skin. Interestingly, when paired with the DTIR, the smoke significantly diminishes. Though some smoke still emanates from the Blackcell skin, it’s primarily directed to the side, making it less intrusive for gamers. This isn’t the first time a weapon has been labeled as pay-to-win; the MAC-10 in Call of Duty: Warzone, for example, faced similar criticisms earlier, but those were mostly due to technical issues. However, the Blackcell seems to be intentionally designed this way, given that its smoke has been adjusted, yet it’s still far from the effectiveness demonstrated by the Blueprint version.

Beyond the problem of distance, several players observed an unusual behavior with the smoke when it encountered bullets. In the footage, under specific sights, the smoke appeared to pulsate erratically, adding to the frustration during shooting. Given that Activision has been responsive to player input in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, there is anticipation among fans that the developers will address this issue in Call of Duty: Warzone as well.
