  • A new UI design for the Call of Duty HQ app is coming in mid-October for easier navigation before Black Ops 6’s release on October 25.

As a long-time Call of Duty enthusiast with countless hours spent on virtual battlefields since the early days of Modern Warfare, I can’t help but breathe a sigh of relief at Activision’s recent announcements. The uncontrollable file sizes and UI frustration that have plagued us gamers for years are finally getting some much-needed attention.

Activision has unveiled significant updates planned for the Call of Duty HQ app, focusing primarily on improving its user interface and addressing long-standing concerns about excessive file sizes that players have been vocal about for years. These changes are scheduled during the build-up to Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, a follow-up to Black Ops Cold War and Black Ops 2, both set in the early ’90s, revolving around the Gulf War era.

Starting from the debut of “Call of Duty: Warzone” in 2020, the file sizes for each new year’s “Call of Duty” game have been consistently increasing. Last year, the PlayStation 5 version of “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3” required a hefty 240 GB of storage space. The debut of the Call of Duty HQ, an all-encompassing app featuring “Warzone” and every recent annual “Call of Duty” game, faced criticism upon its launch due to complaints about its cluttered user interface from many gamers.

In a recent blog post from Activision, it has been announced that Call of Duty will make improvements to reduce file sizes and revamp the High Quality (HQ) User Interface (UI), addressing concerns players have had for several years. Over the coming months, updates are expected to provide users with greater control over what they download, thereby decreasing the storage space required by Call of Duty on devices. Activision has also disclosed that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will boast a smaller file size compared to Modern Warfare 3 from last year; however, the exact reduction is yet to be determined.

Upcoming Call of Duty Updates

  • Reorganizing Game Content / Season 5 Reloaded – August 21
  • Black Ops 6 Open Beta – August 30
  • New User Interface – Mid-October
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Launch – October 25
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Season 1 – [REDACTED]

1st Update: This upcoming update lines up with the Season 5 Reloaded patch for Modern Warfare 3, which goes live on August 21st. This larger update lays the groundwork for future updates aimed at enhancing your gaming experience.

The third upcoming update, planned for release around mid-October, introduces a fresh user interface for Call of Duty, prior to the complete launch of Black Ops 6. The new layout, as demonstrated in the blog post, eliminates the need for players to scroll through their content and instead places major components of Call of Duty like Warzone, Modern Warfare 3, Black Ops 6, and Zombies as prominent tiles at the top of the screen. Upon selecting Black Ops 6, a classic, straightforward home screen appears with only three options: Multiplayer, Zombies, and Single Player.

It’s wonderful to notice that Activision is addressing the concerns the Call of Duty community has been highlighting since the release of the HQ. These updates aim to minimize the impact of Call of Duty on your device and make navigating the HQ app more straightforward. This comes just in time for the upcoming launch of Black Ops 6 on October 25, which fans have eagerly been awaiting.
