Callisto Protocol Was Reportedly Forced to Ship Early With Key Content Cut from the Game

Highlights

  • The Callisto Protocol devs were forced to cut content from the game after the publisher demanded an earlier release date than anticipated.
  • Despite initially giving Striking Distance full control over the survival horror title, publisher Krafton suddenly enforced a December 2022 release date.
  • The pandemic also negatively impacted the game’s development, with entire teams sometimes out on sick leave.

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that The Callisto Protocol was a game that had immense potential but unfortunately fell short due to circumstances beyond its creators’ control. The sudden demand for an earlier release date by the publisher, coupled with the challenges posed by the pandemic, forced the developers at Striking Distance to make some tough decisions.

It’s been reported by the game’s director that the 2022 survival horror title, The Callisto Protocol, had a lot of planned features removed due to a publisher-imposed deadline. Originally, it was intended for release in early 2023; however, publisher Krafton demanded an accelerated launch by December 2022, which resulted in a substantial reduction of the development time.

Title “The Callisto Protocol” by Glen Schofield, creator of “Dead Space”, was eagerly awaited due to its strong influences from both the original game and the critically acclaimed remakes of “Resident Evil”. Upon launch, the game received mixed reviews and a subdued reaction from players. The main criticisms centered around the game’s limited replay value and shallow content, despite positive feedback on its visual appeal and overall themes.

As reported by Dan Allen Gaming’s interview with Schofield, Striking Distance Studios originally had no deadline for developing The Callisto Protocol, thanks to Krafton. However, this situation shifted dramatically when Krafton, famously known as the publisher of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, unexpectedly demanded a release date in December 2022. This sudden demand significantly affected the game development process.

The Callisto Protocol’s Sudden Release Date Change Came At A Huge Cost

Due to an unexpected turn of events, Striking Distance Studios had to eliminate substantial portions of content in their game, such as four additional bosses and two novel enemy types. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic affected the development team directly, with Schofield mentioning that at times entire departments were ill, leaving a backlog of incomplete tasks behind.

Inquired about possible changes in the timeline of creating the game titled “Schofield”, he admitted that he would have been stricter with the initial launch date, allowing the team additional time to expand the intended content. Despite this, Schofield holds plans for a follow-up to the game, and it’s reported that Striking Distance is currently developing an official extension of “The Callisto Protocol”.

Although Schofield’s fresh intellectual property didn’t turn out as expected, his well-known masterpiece, Dead Space, experienced a significant revival in 2023 with the launch of its successful remake. Speculation about a remake for Dead Space 2 also emerged swiftly on the web, but, as stated by developers at Electronic Arts, they don’t have any official plans to revisit the sequel at this time.
