Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” delves into the realm of emotions as its central theme, exploring human feelings and their impact on us. However, even a narrative focusing on emotions can’t avoid elements like knowledge and power. Fern, Frieren’s brilliant pupil, has demonstrated remarkable growth and potential throughout the series. As their journey unfolds, will she outshine her powerful mentor in terms of knowledge and power?
Following Himmel’s passing, Frieren embarked on a journey to gain a deeper understanding of humans. Two decades later, she began searching for Heiter, believing him to be deceased. However, she was delighted to discover he was still alive. Moreover, he had taken in an orphan from the war named Fern as his ward. As one of his dying requests, Heiter asked Frieren to accept Fern as her apprentice. Skeptical about the arrangement due to potential complications and danger, she declined. To persuade Frieren, Heiter devised a plan, posing a riddle about immortality in a book for her to solve. For the next six years, Frieren worked diligently on solving the mystery while simultaneously teaching Fern during her spare time. As Heiter neared his end, he managed to convince Freieren to bring Fern along with her, now that she had become an accomplished mage who wouldn’t hinder her progress.
Why Frieren Chose Fern As Her Student?
Frieren understood that having a young mage like Fern with her would make progress slower and potentially endanger Fern. However, after being persuaded to interpret Heiter’s book, she also began tutoring the talented child. In Episode 1, when Frieren struggled to locate Fern, Fern inquired, “Isn’t it hard for you to find me?” Frieren acknowledged that it was indeed challenging and was impressed by how well Fern managed her mana. She was amazed by her ability for someone so young.
Originally, Fern was trying to demonstrate her magical prowess by shattering a rock with her powers, to show Heiter she was now a competent mage. After Frieren had finished studying the book, Fern managed to blast a distant rock using her magic. Convinced by Heiter’s suggestion, Frieren inquired about his reasons for saving Fern. Heiter explained that it was something Himmel the Hero would have done, which solidified Frieren’s decision to aid Fern since Himmel would have acted similarly.
How Strong is Fern Currently?

In the series “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End,” Frieren has displayed her strength on numerous occasions. Particularly in Episode 9, she overpowered Lugner, who remarked that Frieren was extraordinarily swift when it came to casting spells and he couldn’t match her speed. Interestingly, even Frieren acknowledged that Fern is quicker at spellcasting than herself. In Episode 19, during the initial stage of the First-Class Mage Exam, Frieren effortlessly captured Stille, demonstrating her agility once more. She also successfully deflected Wirbel’s sudden attack, showcasing her remarkable reaction speed and skill in casting spells. Moreover, she easily defeated Ehre, a mage of the second class.
In Episode 27, Fern encounters Serie for the first time and notices right away that Serie is hiding her magical energy, or mana. This was the first instance where someone noticed fluctuations in Serie’s mana. This discovery left such an impact on Fern that she swiftly proposed taking Serie as her student. Although Fern refused, she still recognized Serie as a top-tier mage, classified as First-Class.
Can Fern Beat Frieren?

By the conclusion of its initial season, Fern has blossomed into a formidable First-Class sorceress. Her notable abilities encompass her extraordinary mana management, mana sensing, and exceptional swiftness in spell casting. In Episode 25, Serie predicted that only the Demon King or a human mage could possibly defeat Frieren. This implies that humanity’s time has come, and they are quickly approaching the capabilities of mighty mages like Serie and Frieren. Fern is one such mage who embodies this emerging potential.
As someone captivated by this world of magic, let me tell you, Frieren is a legendary mage who has walked the earth for more than a millennium! Her wisdom, her years of experience, and her mana reserve are unmatched even by young prodigies like Fern. In episode 26, despite working together, Fern couldn’t defeat Frieren’s replica. This replica employed an attack that not only slipped past Fern’s detection but also left him utterly unprepared to respond. This incident serves as a testament to the enigma that is Frieren’s power. For now, it seems that even the talented Fern can’t outmatch the venerable Frieren.
In the course of their adventure, Fern appears to be learning extensively, much like Frieren. However, it’s speculative whether she will surpass Frieren or even Serie in terms of power as a human mage. Yet, such a comparison remains challenging at this point.
